they couldn't make the trophy out of brass so that it would at least look gold? that's truly what differentiates it from other trophies. it's why they travel with the damn thing on tour even though it was won so long ago.

I like it other than the trophy (is there an irony about an Arsenal fan saying that...?).

Not sure what it is but I think without it, the statue would look timeless, iconic etc. With it, I think it looks a tad bit naff (like the style of the PL trophy clashes with the style of the statue as a whole).

Nitpicky perhaps...

I think it looks pretty good, captures his likeness better than, say, the Tony Adams one. If they weren't going to recreate his Messiah pose at Old Trafford, I think this is probably the right one.

Such a boss. It’s a truly great moment in the history of top flight English football to capture. Rarified air. Perhaps they can take the trophy off later and add that kind of gold to it. Understated is good though.

I get irked by this kind of public sculpture because, for me, it's not a very good likeness. Great effort and a suitable homage, but it's not giving me Arsène Wenger.

Burnwinter Sometimes you look at for example Roman or Greek statues of the past and makes you realise how humans have somehow got worse at them over time! Am guessing it has become a lost art.

Also wish they had made the trophy look gold which is what sets it apart from all other trophies any other club has won. But still awesome. Will hopefully make it over there to see all the statues one day.

JazzG Yeah, it is an incredibly difficult skill. I'm back living in Perth at the moment which has quite a lot of cast statues of contemporary figures, and a lot of them are unreasonably fucked up.

For example there's a statue of former Australian Prime Minister John Curtin in central Fremantle, and the statue's arms are blatantly about six inches different in length.

One of those things AI will probably help out with a fair bit 😆

The absolute weirdest thing about the statuary of antiquity (and the ruined temples and so on) is that ... they were painted, and often in ways that sound aesthetically horrifying in retrospect.

All those dudes online who use those elegant marble Marcus Aurelius busts as their userpics oughta know they started out with cartoon eyes painted on them ... 👀
