Nah, ESR is not playing because he's recovering or not fit enough. The only reason is that Arteta doesn't like him/the way he plays. If he did, he wouldn't give him meaningless 5-minute cameos here and there. He'd be played back into fitness/form, like the rest of the first-teamers. I'm expecting Timber's return from injury will look more like Jesus' than ESR's.

ESR was carefully managed because he can't stay fit. As soon as his minutes were ramped up, he got injured again. ESR's problem is his own body. This idea that Arteta doesn't like him is nonsense.

We don't need to rush him back like Jesus because we have alternatives. Additionally, ESR has the worst injury record of any player in the squad so needs greater management. Both things can be true. Shock horror!

Your criticism is wrong as usual on Arteta's management. You bemoaned the fact that he wasn't getting enough minutes, as soon as he got two starts in a row, he broke down. It's not Arteta letting you down here, it's ESR.

QuincyAbeyie while ESR was dealing with serious health and fitness issues related to his growth spurts, it was interesting to see the typical fan fiction about Arteta hating him despite Arteta’s early reliance on him. The kid has been struggling with pubic apophysitis, strain from late development. This is very painful and requires a lot of recovery time. You need to keep testing how much load the body can take. A one year recovery is not unusual. So let’s be patient and support the process, and hope that he is able to come back. I’m excited that through this process he has gotten significantly bigger, so could be a good 8 or 9 alternative once he’s ready.

daredevil I'm not saying it's wrong of Arteta to prefer other players, I'm saying that he does. But since you clearly disagree, which of the players currently playing are you saying Arteta likes less than ESR?

Timber looked like he would have been a real asset for us in these kind of games; boldly and swiftly resupplying our front line (esp. Saka) and contributing to the ‘washing machine’ nature of play. Zinchenko used to be good at this with his slide passes but hardly seeing that these days. Thought both him and Ødegaard provided some tame ploppy lobs to Martinelli that gave TAA and or Konate opportunities to close the spaces. Fair enough if the pitch was a factor. I wonder if they watered it to help deaden TAAs balls out to Salah

My feeling on the "Timber is set to come back sooner than expected" stuff that's been floating around is that it's engagement-bait bullshit. However, if he's already doing side-to-side workouts at jogging speed, then I doubt he can be super duper far from being back.

DiabyKungFu it is encouraging to see. Without more context than his first days running last month, and these initial workouts, I wouldn’t be surprised if we had a few sub appearances in March.

Even the clips of him running last month were all straight-line movements. My understanding of knee ligament injuries is that you start doing straight-line movements at full speed way before you start doing any side-to-side movements at all, so it wasn't necessarily indicative that he would be back super soon. These side-to-side workouts actually seem like a much bigger deal in comparison.

DiabyKungFu yeah. Being able to go side to side, up-and-down is the test. Of course on top of that he has to first recover all the muscle he lost during this ordeal to buttress the ligaments, and then he has to build up his stamina. So I really would not be shocked if he appears in March for a run out.

Think he’s being a tad overhyped. Technically great and a very clever play but need to see that he can cope with the physical demands of the Prem.

lorddulaarsenal initial auditions looked good. He had the best combination of progressive passes and carries in Europe last year. And he looked good in our US your and community shield. Out left side progression issues, he might’ve helped address.

HomeSteak Lol, let's hope ESR can channel his incredible form into something productive during those 3-6 minutes he'll get against Crystal Palace. Can't give him more time, we're protecting him after returning from injury, you see.
