Said it before, White is on the best right backs around. His problem is that Timber is the best right back around. White would be starting every game if he was at Liverpool or City.

I said it somewhere in this thread that I believe CB is his best position, he's probably the closest thing to Saliba around IMO. Similar strengths (unbeatable 1 v 1, cool under pressure, great dribbling etc) and weaknesses (weak on lofted balls in the air)

We have no choice at this point. Could also play White inside, but I prefer White over Timber at RB when both are firing.

Tactics I know some Dutch people who claim Timber was the best central defender they've seen in ages in Eredivisie.

The reality of it is that he's too small for a centreback in Premier League though: he's similar to Sagna in that regard too. Wenger never used him there unless he absolutely had to because we lost too much height advantage, and I think Arteta views Timber the same way. Villa have Onana back now and playing Timber is like asking for being done in on a setpiece, there's over 2/3 of a foot in height difference between them.

Hopefully Saliba is back so we can play Timber on the right. I reckon that's where we'll have the best opportunity to hurt Villa, with Rogers being too attacking and Guessand being too poor in both ends. Timber is gonna dance around them.

I much prefer Timber out wide to White. However, I also prefer Timber at CB to White.

Klaus Spot on, good comparison to Sagna. In this league you need to be big to play CB, remember Brentford targeting Ben White when he was our CB with the aerial ball when we played them a few years back.

Thought the exact same thing the other day, and not necessarily due to similar playing styles. I think Timber is far better on the ball.. However, their mentality and attitiude is similar. Absolutely no nonsense under pressure, professional and isn't distracted by anything.

Klaus Height certainly helps but it isn’t the be all and end all when it comes to being good in the air. Saliba for example, is quite tall but he doesn’t fill me with confidence on high balls. He’s quite dodgy at them.

Drogba was one of the best headers of the ball I have ever seen, he was truly a beast in the air. He used to eat PL defenders for breakfast, yet Ayala, who was way shorter than Timber, made him look like a schoolboy in the 2004 UEFA cup final.

Anyone also remembers Canavarro winning headers against players almost twice his height ? Timber to me is simply not great in the air (would have been the case even if he was tall IMO), it’s one aspect of his game he really needs to work on, same applies to Saliba.

Sagna played CB for us against Sunderland away I believe and he was amazing!

Timber is indeed a centre back by trade. But he’s awesome everywhere.

timber would be better aerially against villa even with onana back than everyone bar gabriel and saliba.

i don't regularly watch the dutch national team, so i don't know if it was a one-off, but he started at CB and van de ven started at LB.

There is also the option to partner Calafiori and Hincapie as centrebacks with Myles on the left

I just looked it up, it was against Sunderland away. Mind you, that used to be a dodgy ground for us.

Tactics yep I always remember that Sunderland game, Sagna killed it at CB. Not sure why we didn't try him there for longer. His legs were going as a right back anyway.

Gazza M I can't get over the fact that Ten Hag worked with these guys day in and day out and then the defender he went for at United ended up being Martinez, while moving heaven and earth to sign Antony.
