Sicario2 - Tier 1

Will write on this thread after City on Sunday.

That’s the only pre-season game that counts which will tell us a lot about what’s going to occur this season.

Sicario2 - Tier 1 even that I don't take all that seriously. It'll tell us a bit more but not the whole story. We certainly don't look as ready for the new season as we did last year but pre-season isn't all that illustrative. Its mainly to gain fitness and its very chop and changey which we don't deal well with. Thats the main thing I agree with @HomeSteak on, can Arteta manage a big squad? It'll define our season IMO.

HomeSteak the defending is the main concern. It's really quite shocking despite how many good defenders and DMs we now have.

I assume the major CF signing will come in January (opportunistically) or next summer (a long-time target).

No Saka backups, STILL, is quite pathetic. As is our inability to shift players and especially for non-insulting money.

We've beaten Liverpool in the Community before, we've beaten City 3-0. Didn't do us much good.

Think we beat them in Guardiola's first preseason too.

We haven't beaten them in the league for 8.5 years though.

I've mentioned my take on what I'm looking at this season. I don't ever look or care about pre season personally it is pretty irrelevant as far as I am concerned The game against forest is where I'll begin scrutinising us.

But my core expectation is unchanged. Last season was exceptional particularly that first half. As I've said before my gut feeling is it was a perfect storm the kind of natural variation that comes about every so often and we may revert to something closer to the 2nd half of the season.. So the challenge I see is can this yeah show that isn't the case, that they can repeat that level. The way we tailed off and looked pretty awful defensively in the second half of the season and in particularly that later run in give me quite a lot of concern.

It's those areas I want to see us demonstrate that really were just an anomaly. These are questions I'd have with our without anything in preseason

Panda Agree with that. We "put the pressure on." Trophies are what it's all about now.

I think that a strong title push again, and at least a cup, and the quarterfinals of the CL (at least past the group stage) would be the minimum goal. Hopefully the team with the additions gel quickly, it is still early days.

Agree with title push needing to be an internal expectation within the team for multiple reasons. Don't need to shout it out necessarily, but certainly understood within the club. Competitors rebuilding, we've got legitimate 2-3 of the league's finest players, the amount invested in the squad. Arteta being well paid to 'make it shiny'.

if we dont sign a legit striker before the end of the window, i dont think we'll have a realistic shot of winning the title or making a deep run in the CL. disappointing too, because the rest of the squad is in pretty good shape

Agreed. Funny how we have that striker in Balogun but Arteta refuses to play him.

Yep. In an absolutely ideal world, we'd have a player like Player 1 as our starter and a player like Player 2 as our backup.

You're either being funny, or wilfully dumb if you think Balogun is that good, and Arteta just isn't playing him because no reason.

I think this is one of Arteta’s blind spots. I know Balogun may have broken some of his ‘non-negotiables’ and come across as petulant but every player is different and needs to be managed different.

Balogun hasn’t really been given a real chance at Arsenal and practically hasn’t even kicked a ball pre-season. He’s clear of Eddie so should be at least having his minutes.

If I told you we signed one of the best young strikers from the French league last year I’m sure you would accepted that as a back up striker

Timber being out for a long period, does this change your expectations?

When you get opportunities (like last season) you have to take them as no guarantee you will be in a similar position again.

Pepe LeFrits we have so many defenders. And several ago can play left back. This os the one starter we could afford to lose. But I was quite excited by him.

It does not change my expectation. I was not counting on Timber to be the started before the season started, and now that he may out for a while, I am still not counting on him.
