Feels to me like a weird window where we have chucked the principles that served us well last year out of the window and are building some Frankenstein’s monster of a team. Guess will just have to reserve judgment till the first 3 months of the season are done.

Bernard Woolley the plan is very clear. Possession team. High technical ability on the ball, good off the ball movement and ball recovery / pressures. More bodies in the box (stat we lead the league). Additional height to help is escape the press. Crystal clear

This is a strange take. It seems pretty clear what the intention is to me, but maybe it's early..

Haven't really seen a signing that half of the people say it's underwhelming and waste of money and the other half being more excited for him than our record signing Rice

Clrnc I think that's largely due to the fact this can go either way and this polarisation of potential outcomes is reflected in fan opinion.

TambourineMan I wonder how excited the majority of us would have been had we signed him three years ago - I know I would have been more so (and I'm not exactly displeased by the signing now). It's understandable when you think how many times we've signed damaged goods from Chelsea, never seems to end well.

RocktheCasbah That said, this is literally the first time we are signing a Chelsea player that isn't quite a past it player (exclude Lassana and Gallas). At 24 he has his best years ahead of him. I'm really quite confident he will do well here having followed his youth career. He is a unique specimen.

Even Jorginho is actually not a failure signing for us. Was worth the money and was useful enough.

Havertz might be effective going forward in the Xhaka role, but I worry about our defense. We looked really fragile on the break the last 10 or so matches last season.

Kel Varnsen I guess that's why we've gone for the big D in front of the defense. He's coming here to help solve that issue.

That said, he won't be able to do that if Arteta runs him, and the rest of the team into the ground by April by not using his squad, so hopefully, this is the season he finally feels comfortable doing it - with the outlay being made, I'm not sure he has an excuse this time out.

you can't teach height. his physical traits are probably the most interesting thing. having that height higher up the pitch is different to anything we have, and can open some new options for us. plus his nose for runs and positioning is good. if he is indeed taking xhakas place, all of the above could spice things up for us creatively
