VAR discussions really need to be opened up to be broadcast live. Would take a lot of the controversy out of it I think

Pepe LeFrits Arseblog had a good piece on this today actually.

I think broadcasting VAR live would be an excellent thing in terms of accountability, but Arseblog correctly points out the "behind VAR" shows Howard Webb is lined up to cohost with Michael Owen feels more like PGMOL trying to horn in on the cash and celebrity of players ... that's gotta be nipped in the bud.

To be fair to Webb, he's been a huge improvement on Mike Riley in terms of transparency and accountability and whatever the motivation for this, it's another step in the right direction.

From the transcripts and other odd bits, the biggest obstacle is that they don't hold each other accountable and instead cover for each other. The United-Wolves penalty is basically the VAR official thinking it's a pen but talking himself out of it because the referee makes it very clear that he doesn't want it reviewed because it's absolutely 'just a collision'.

To be charitable about it, all these blokes, refs and linos have been conditioned to behave this way so as to show a united front on the pitch.

They should instead train a corps of VARs drawn from the ranks of forum posters, people who've been conditioned for a lifetime to despise the refs, and are also horribly pedantic.

It's like straight out of the parenting handbook, or at least the one I was exposed to growing up. Mum or dad make a wrong decision regarding you, whether it's something you did or didn't do, and even if the other parent disagrees, they'll act like they are totally on the same page in front of you. No apologies, no backtracking, the decision stands.

I would so love that to be the case. The VARs effectively being a ref oversight committee ensuring that they can't fuck about without finding out.

It's honestly not a bad idea, although it would have to cut both ways, and you probably wouldn't go straight for forum posters but just cast your net as wide as possible for the greatest talents among deranged football pedants.

Let's face it, if there was a Wudan Mountain equivalent for football pedantry there would be no shortage of acolytes willing to starve themselves on the front porch begging for admission while instantly reading situations with multiple potentially passive offsides, multiple defenders behind the keeper etc.
