Will be a good acquisition. Havertz has really good offensive fundamentals. We need to see him on defense, but a lot of what’s needed can be trained over the summer. He will generate a lot of chances, miss a few, create for others. The player who should most be concerned about this acquisition is ESR because he’s profiling physically and operationally the way one would hope ESR would.

Claudius also a good point. ESR seems to be in a position where has to prove himself. still think he is capable of challenging martinelli for that left hand role. ESR brings some different qualities to the table there but martis raw output last season means it's his place to lose

Gazza M I doubt he challenges Martinelli for that role. Martinelli offers a unique outlet. He is very direct, leads the team on take one and is second on chances created for others. Very often, he’s the guy jumpstarting our attack. ESR just doesn’t have the explosiveness. ESR would also need to fully learn the dual role that Martinelli has of stretching the left and drifting centrally to finish.

Of all our players, Martinelli is still to me the guy with the biggest variance in outcomes. There is a chance that this coming season he blows up and hits 25 goals all comps.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert

Claudius ESR is an explosive dribbler (especially over 10-15 yards) but yeah, a different profile to Martinelli and it's the Brazilian's spot to lose.

Hoping ESR gets a chance in one of the AM spots this preseason.

I'm with Claudius, I don't see ESR as a rival to Martinelli for that left wing role. Firstly because Martinelli is too good and gives us too much out there in terms of output, but secondly, I think ESR is viewed more as an option centrally, and also is not considered anything more than a squad player heading into the season. If he can figure out how to play that left 8 role to an elite level perhaps he can claim a starting spot in the future, but he's no more than a utility option for now.

QuincyAbeyie when you put it this way it really sucks. I'm so used to us being shafted by selling clubs, even for Rice while we undervalue our own players and sell for dirt cheap prices.

I rate Havertz potential and is generally happy with this transfer having followed his youth a lot in Germany but one have to wonder in a one horse race like this where all other interested clubs aren't even willing to go close to 50m, could we do better rather than just giving Chelsea what they want?

That said finally not a past it player from a rival!

Nah, it's a decent deal that I reckon both sides will be happy with. Better to get it done before they sell Kovacic and Mount, at which point our bargaining power is weakened if they no longer need to sell before July.

People talk about Havertz having 3 average seasons and therefore should come at a discount - if he had 3 good/great seasons where he met expectations, he'd be going for 100m+, or more likely just wouldn't be available. Whether or not £50m is a bargain therefore will be determined by whether he continues to be average or if he can fulfil that potential.

Chelsea taking a £25m hit on Havertz.

His surges in to the box are just what we need. We don’t have many players who can get on the end of the crosses and cut backs our wing men create.

He’ll basically be a more athletic and aesthetically pleasing Xhaka.

lorddulaarsenal they made a profit on him. They bought him for 71m inclusive of add ons but the add ons wasn't achieved.

Sounds like our bid is around £50m rising to £65m, would have liked the max to be around £55m. I think he'll do a hell of a lot better than some are making it out, Chelsea have history of ruining talent and the boy has mad talent.

JazzG I don't think I can think of many (if any?) transfers recently where we've had a player come from Chelsea that I look back on and think we've come out the winning party.
