RocktheCasbah Arteta doing a good job doesn't mean he gets everything right. Its unrealistic to think any manager never makes mistakes. We've already signed a few mistakes, that doesn't mean "Arteta out" or whatever, its just reality. And this one looks like a mistake to me. Maybe it wont be and I'll be wrong and thats fine, but I'll be fucked if I'm going to pretend I rate a player who's been shit for 3 years just because Arteta wants him.

Qwiss I'm not saying he hasn't, or won't, make mistakes. I am saying - to flobaba's point, if Arteta wants Havertz, there's probably a very good reason for this. We don't know what that is, but that's where the trust comes in.

Qwiss I really hope Arteta is right here because if he's wrong we are stuck with Havertz for a long time.

Havertz still managed to get the attention of Bayern and Arsenal (and Madrid to a lesser extent) after his 3 years. I don't think he'll struggle to find a second buyer. He's a very talented player that hasn't executed so far but he's also not had the right environment around him to do so.

The only question is where exactly he plays - he can't play in the Xhaka role and he's wasted as a striker. So if he sign him, he'll have to play as a number 10 or we shift to a system closer to what City play. It wouldn't be too surprising because the signing of Timber and the rumours of ESR moving centrally make sense in this context too.

flobaba some may have moaned about jesus but i wasnt one of them. i wouldve liked him to be slightly cheaper but other than that it seemed a sensible signing that filled a long standing problem in the team

I didn't call this a crap signing, for the record, just that the jesus one was more obvious and thus not comparable to signing havertz, who brings more questions than answers. paying this price for versatile squad depth doesn't really hold up as an argument either. you spend trossard/lavia money if you want that. I doubt we've convinced him to come here as less than a starter

Gazza M I expect he will be a starter. To replace Xhaka. With the technical skills, vision and work rate the position demands. An Odegaard type on the left. That's what I envision for him (what I've always wanted for the role). Similar to Jesus, I expect him to help us get a bit more out of Saka and Martinelli, while he gets his as well.

But he will also give us options in other positions because of his versatility.

Maybe it's my lens but I'm seeing nothing but donut here.

this doesn't strike me as wenger opportunity buy and we'll figure out how to play with you later. arteta knows how he wants to play and how players fit in that system. i have to believe it will all come together in pre-season.

left sided ode is my suspicion/hope as well. I'd love it if he became that rangy midfielder that ghosts into the area and chips in with 10-15 goals

Will be a good acquisition. Havertz has really good offensive fundamentals. We need to see him on defense, but a lot of what’s needed can be trained over the summer. He will generate a lot of chances, miss a few, create for others. The player who should most be concerned about this acquisition is ESR because he’s profiling physically and operationally the way one would hope ESR would.

Claudius also a good point. ESR seems to be in a position where has to prove himself. still think he is capable of challenging martinelli for that left hand role. ESR brings some different qualities to the table there but martis raw output last season means it's his place to lose

Gazza M I doubt he challenges Martinelli for that role. Martinelli offers a unique outlet. He is very direct, leads the team on take one and is second on chances created for others. Very often, he’s the guy jumpstarting our attack. ESR just doesn’t have the explosiveness. ESR would also need to fully learn the dual role that Martinelli has of stretching the left and drifting centrally to finish.

Of all our players, Martinelli is still to me the guy with the biggest variance in outcomes. There is a chance that this coming season he blows up and hits 25 goals all comps.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert

Claudius ESR is an explosive dribbler (especially over 10-15 yards) but yeah, a different profile to Martinelli and it's the Brazilian's spot to lose.

Hoping ESR gets a chance in one of the AM spots this preseason.

I'm with Claudius, I don't see ESR as a rival to Martinelli for that left wing role. Firstly because Martinelli is too good and gives us too much out there in terms of output, but secondly, I think ESR is viewed more as an option centrally, and also is not considered anything more than a squad player heading into the season. If he can figure out how to play that left 8 role to an elite level perhaps he can claim a starting spot in the future, but he's no more than a utility option for now.

QuincyAbeyie when you put it this way it really sucks. I'm so used to us being shafted by selling clubs, even for Rice while we undervalue our own players and sell for dirt cheap prices.

I rate Havertz potential and is generally happy with this transfer having followed his youth a lot in Germany but one have to wonder in a one horse race like this where all other interested clubs aren't even willing to go close to 50m, could we do better rather than just giving Chelsea what they want?

That said finally not a past it player from a rival!
