Sicario2 - Tier 1 "completely" is going too far imo. I also wonder how much of the last two games is an unconscious relaxing of effort with the title gone.

That said, I'm not gonna pretend that I haven't found the last two games tremendously disappointing. Forest got lucky with their goal, but we were so 2020 today I almost expected to see Willian out there. My cousin Josh and I were chatting during the game and it was very apparent to me early second half we weren't gonna score, and I think Arteta has been shown up a little over the last few weeks.

50 points might be an outlier but there’s a reason why it occurred. We played excellent, title challenging worthy football for 80% of the season. That’s not something you trip over and fall into.

In the end we were not ready or equipped to see it through. The challenge will be to build on this year and not slip back, which can easily happen. Recruitment will be key.

We’ve bottled it. How we played for 80% of the season isn’t the determining factor.

Ultimately there’s no shame in losing the title to City but there’s plenty of shame to go from 8 points ahead (with a game advantage) to this shitshow.

We’ve managed to embarrass ourselves in a season when we really could have ended it with our head held high if we showed some level of performance in the closing weeks

we need be very calculated and precise with what we do next. there's an assumption that because we're a young team we'll organically come back just as good or better next season. one must always operate under the possibility that the players may have just had career years (aka a statistical outlier), that there's no guarantee they hit those levels again, and to plan accordingly

Good point and it's maybe the one silver lining to the collapse in terms of highlighting where we're vulnerable.

Ramsdale - I don't think he was playing out of his skin relative to his ability.
White - possible concern, he was amazing first half but really poor since Saliba's injury or maybe even the World Cup. Need some redundancy there.
Saliba & Gabriel - as a pair I personally think they'll only get better, particularly the former.
Zinchenko - again I don't think he was playing beyond his level, but I do think we need to build in some redundancy for injury/form/flakeyness.
Partey - biggest area of concern. Was superb and is a key aspect to how we play. Need to guard against a potential drop off.
Xhaka - career high but leaving anyway and is actually a chance to upgrade
Odegaard, Martinelli, Saka - I think the only way is up for these guys and I don't think that's optimistic.
Jesus, Trossard, Eddie - again not exactly career highs. Goal droughts, injuries etc. You'd expect more actually.

Yeah I think I worry that the 50 point half season is taken as granted whereas I think that's an outlier. If we return similar to the norm then we'll be in for 30+ points season which will put us back in a 4,5,6 battle.

Ole managed to get United second but I never die one second believed that's where they were at. Arteta has to prove that's what goes Arsenal are and anything short of that will suggest he's not the manager we thought

We are really pissing this season away, aren't we? In fact I feel like I might as well actually be watching a streamer of my own piss trickle into the gutter after a Saturday night on an equally piss poor nightclub drag.

I remember a stats column from March which put the likelihood of the season not going down to the last day as very low, but we've managed it.

As with last season, we'll be going into summer with a huge, huge question mark over Arteta's capacity to prepare, motivate and condition the team through these difficult closing periods of the season. Because at this point it's clear Super Mik, despite his evidently brilliant work in others ways, has fucked it up again.

Burnwinter The thing that annoys me the most is not that we didn't win the title, is the way we bottled/capitulated which was predicted by all the stupid media unfairly. Now we just proven them correct and they take things out of context. I keep hearing how this is the Arsenal way, often bottling out of title races etc and we can't even argue against that.

We had 2 seperate stages of the season where we had 8 points lead, had many stages where statistically we are looking great but nobody predicted this relegation form in the last 8 matches. We really fucked it up massively and the table won't look good at the end.

I think I will never jump the gun again or be too confident about this team even if we have a 15 point lead in future. The way some were saying this team is better than invincibles etc and how 2nd place with 90 points is now wide off the mark. This team is so far away it's barely matching our 07-08 great team which finished only 4 points off.

Saka has been out of form but I think Arteta has overplayed him.

Players will be naturally more in the red zone at this stage more so in this season because of the world cup.

City with their strength in depth have an obvious advantage that is amplified.

Clrnc tbh I don't really see anything wrong with what he said. He's actually been pretty fair to us there. That little rat Neville on the other hand is a big time hater.

Clrnc It's the history of the Arsenal now. Four of the top five highest percentage of the season leading to end up not winning the title. Really it was never in doubt.

Clrnc This team is so far away it's barely matching our 07-08 great team which finished only 4 points off.

That team only managed 83 points (we can still get 84) and also went on a run with 1 win in 8 games when it seemed like our title to lose. We also collapsed earlier down the line, we were 1 point behind after 34 games this season albeit with an extra game played, in 2008 we were 9 behind after 34 games, and 7 behind Chelsea in second - but that's just splitting hairs.

There's actually a lot of similarities with that season. Both teams defied expectations to challenge, both teams relatively young, both had critical 'what if' moments (Birmingham/Liverpool) that went against us, both comprehensively failed to deal with injuries, and adversity.

Hopefully that's where the similarities end though, because I remember thinking that side just needed a few additions to push further and longer the following year. Instead we lost Flamini, Hleb, Gilberto, Diarra and signed Mikel fucking Silvestre in the summer. For all of the questions about Arteta's man management or his own ability to deal with pressure, I am convinced the man won't allow us to go backwards.

Sicario2 - Tier 1

Re Arteta. He has to be very careful that we don’t enter an #artetaout situation early next season:

1) we’re playing some big teams in pre-season, I know they are only friendlies but in recent summers our form early in the season had been dictated by how we’ve done in these games. 2021 shit summer and we had our worst start ever to the league. Last summer was great and we took that momentum into the season and had a great start.

2) Signings. If we have a summer where again we are ‘1 or 2 players’ short or sell a fan favourite player (ESR) without replacing then the pressure will be magnified again and Arteta will be the first to receive it

3) Man City community shield. We are most likely going to face them and if we get thrashed then this is going to put a lot of spotlight on Arteta again and coupled with not making the right signings will be very WengerOut esque when we used to lose big first games of the season as well as not making right signings (Aston Villa at home 2013 or Liverpool away 2017 for example).

4) Champions League. This is a bit further into the season as it starts in Sept but if Man City win the CL we will be in pot 3 aka potential group of death. If we bow out of the CL at the first hurdle this will again put massive pressure on Arteta and if we’ve signed adequate squad depth in the summer he will struggle accommodating everyone throughout the rest of the season which will be an issue in terms of keeping players happy

5) Early fixtures. Let’s just pray the calendar is kind to us and we get some good games unlike 2018/2019 or 2021/2022.

I know the above is quite negative but if some of it does occur I really do worry about Mikel and the huge pressure he could find himself in. Next season will be his biggest test imo.

Probably the wrong thread but how are the pots decided? Not paid any attention to it in recent years so just assumed we'd be in the bottom one having been out of it for so long and be in a group with Real Madrid and Bayern or whatever. How does City winning impact what pot we're in? Assume you can't play a team from the same league until later so at least we won't have to play City in that.

Not sure mate, read it somewhere. Obviously our Coefficient sucks given our recent poor European record.

One other thing re Arteta. Apart from early season pressure he needs be careful if we ever find ourself in a position to win trophies come business end. It will be hard to trust him/us. The last 3 have gone like this:

2021 - bottled it v Villarreal EL
2022 - bottled top 4
2023 - bottled League

2020 was saved by FA Cup but we also bottled EL by losing to Olympiakos.
