They're called exceptions to the rule. The fact that you can only name 2 whilst going back 20+ years only proves the rule. City beat Liverpool in 13/14 and only lost the reverse fixture. Most top of the table clashes are tight and spoils are often shared over two games. Us winning the league this season whilst losing twice to City would be an anomaly.

daredevil 13/14 was a 3 horse race. Chelsea beat both Liverpool and City home and away, got 12/12 yet finished 3rd 4 points behind.

If we loses the title this season, it is definitely not because we lost to City twice.

I'm saying the more consistently we compete for the big trophies the more we'll get used to it.

Spurs barely hard a single title charge and their finals have been few and far between. Them 'bottling' a final periodically doesn't really mean anything - the problem is their players are not used to competing for the big honours every single year on multiple fronts.

It's the same with latter day Wenger sides. They never competed at the top consistently, it was one off surprise title challenges every 3-4 years and then back to fighting for top four.

Don't really agree with that at all. We can't be overanalysing and constantly giving ourselves excuses/reasons like these. Napoli this new team this year didn't really get rehearsals from a title challenge. Same goes for Milan last year, or Feyenoord this year, Rangers 2 years ago, Dortmund's first season under Klopp, or Leicester the year after they survived relegation etc etc plenty more examples.

Basically, experience in a title challenge really doesn't matter as long as you get the basics right. Unless the stats has shown that you have been ridiculously lucky in the season and most of the results were unsustainable, at which point it was never probable to get the amount of points we got to.

I saw a stat today. We have spent 93% of the season top (247 days). If we don't win the title this year, we would have beaten the previous team holding this stat by a huge margin whom was on 70%. It was also... Arsenal. Guess who's in 3rd place too? 53% - Arsenal. Can't really blame the media for having this narrative about us when we don't help ourselves sadly.

Technically it's not a necessity but you end up giving yourself so much more to do if you lose those games. It means you have to be near perfect the rest of the season.

If we even drew both games we'd be 6 points better off, if we won both we'd be 12 points better off.

goon The funny thing is most people here expect us to lose to them. The whole reason everyone did the run-in calculation to see where we can drop points is because we know we will lose to them and can't afford to drop points elsewhere.

If we didn't drop 6 poor points prior, but yet lost to City twice and manage to win the title I am pretty confident people won't come here and say we shouldn't win the title because we lost to our direct rival twice.

My post has nothing to do with 'excusing' this season. If anything saying 'bottling it' is just part of our DNA and we can't do anything about it is closer to excusing it.

Secondly, surely analysing and finding reasons for our failure is exactly what we should be doing?

In football, much like in life, sometime you get opportunities when you least expect them. You have to do whatever you can (legally) to take these opportunities or there may not be another one.

In a years time when we are battling for fourth place you will realise how much of a missed opportunity this season was.

Everyone thought we would be in numerous CL finals post Paris but that never happened. Knew it at the time. Sometimes you just get one shot.

Hm, no idea what you're talking about with the DNA stuff, but 'bottling it' is quite literally the opposite of excusing it, since it just means that we did much worse than can be expected of us in the situation we were in.

Not buying that. We're a really good team. No reason to think we'll be battling for just fourth next season.

Plus this season isn't over yet. Everybody is upset, I get it, but we need a bit of calm and see what we've been doing is something that works. We've been on the wrong side of fine margins recently, shit happens. Let's finish as strong as possible and take it to the wire.

Don't you think these are all things you learn from experience though? Both for Arteta and the players? Which goes back to my earlier point about why it's less likely to happen next season and the following one.

I think we've already seen signs of Arteta learning from those mistakes in the last 2-3 games.
