After watching Martinelli in the flesh twice, I think it would be great if we could have someone to rotate with him. He's not a priority for upgrading but someone like Mitoma will take his place if we had him

Anyway FWIW, Jorginho was good when he came on too. We need to know how to make changes earlier when the game is going away from us.

Nelson caused Coufal worries too, more than what Martinelli threatened for the previous 60mins but he only had 5 mins.

Trossard is an unbelievable player, but he really needed a striker in front of him today. They couldn't get a hold of him but it was for nothing as there was no one up front

Clrnc bringing Jorginho and Trossard on too worked to gain a bit of control. Its good that Arteta learned from last week as its exactly what should have happened at 2-1 up at Anfield. The problem this week was we were already at 2-2 and looking to need to make changes to become more offensive in the next few minutes.

Agree that Arteta needs to be more pro-active with his sub’s though.

Sicario2 - Tier 1 we just have better command of the ball when Nelson plays. Martinelli’s pace and directness makes things happen but he’s another who isn’t a great fit for the side. He’s too head down at times

Just because Nelson scored one memorable goal v Bournemouth doesn’t mean he is the answer to all our problems.

lorddulaarsenal Nelson's played 107 minutes in the league all season which is a non existent sample size. He also started in the two games against Sporting where our football was shocking. Meanwhile with Martinelli - warts and all - we're top of the league. So it's not that obvious, no.

Nelson's done well with his minutes but it's akin to people suggesting Nketiah could bench Jesus even though there's a gap in talent.

I guess the positive thing you can say is that it's still in our hands and the equation is still the same as it was before this game. Draw the Man City game and win all the others. Realistically though, having collapsed from 2-0 two games in a row, we just haven't quite got enough to do it.
There's no shame in 2nd and we'd all have taken it before the season but it's obviously going to be devastating having gone so close.

If you think Nelson should replace Martinelli, who is our form player, you are mad.

Tactics

Finding it hard to get over this result and I have been avoiding everything football related.

Think this team could do with a ball retention specialist, one that can pick up the ball and you can't take it off him unless you foul him. A player of that type would allow our team to breathe during difficult moments, similar to what Bernardo Silva can do for City or Modric for Madrid. Hleb was underrated by our fans because he didn't score goals, but he was elite at helping us control matches during key moments IMO.

I'd be over the moon if we could get Frenkie de Jong along with a technically sound ball winner in the summer.

Sicario2 - Tier 1 While I agree with you, the crazier suggestion there is that Nelson should somehow be ahead of Trossard in the pecking order.

Edit: Didn't see that Trossard was in midfield.

Martinelli is a productivity monster. There is no way I would want him dropped. I’m fine if 3 in 4 games Trossard can rotate with someone from the front 3 but give Martinelli his credit. Think about the goals scored and chances created last few games and the role he has played.
