Pretty sure Merse was still around under Wenger, yeah. Always had the impression his alcohol and gambling issues sort of washed him out of the squad as the Wenger wellness regime appeared.

I had not understood the stat correctly, thought the commentary had made a mistake when they said 86, but I see how they meant it now.

Not to hate on Xhaka gratuitously but it's another reason to look forward to him and one or two others departing.

Merse defo played under Wenger. I remember when he was sold Wenger offered him a new contract but he was offered more money and a longer contract at Middlesbrough so left.

Burnwinter love this. Thanks. I think a lot of us have replayed the goal again and again to just see what each Player did. Unfortunately there aren't enough camera angles to do justice to the frenzy that followed.

Not to spruik it, but The Athletic is pretty worth the subscription at the moment. I think I got a year of it at $1 a month on some sort of introductory offer towards the start of the season.

Barring the odd blog post or the extreme tactical nerdery you get from some other places, it's probably the best Arsenal coverage I'm seeing.

QuincyAbeyie Not really, no. Even the written analysis is fairly limited, it's just very Arsenal skewed and they do a better job of match previews and recaps than most outlets.

What a fucking joke of an organisation, probably seething that despite the ref fucking us over we still managed to turn the match around. I can imagine the VAR team frantically looking to see how they could disallow the 3rd goal.

As someone on twitter said, you have to ask what the FA would be trying to achieve with this and it's hard to come up with anything other than sucking the life out of the game.

Call me paranoid, but the way the ref on the day raised his arm to indicate a goal for Nelson seemed super dejected too 😆

JazzG No doubt they were trying to find a way to disallow it. It's a surprise the ref didn't just blow for full time instead of allowing the corner.
For whatever reason, they just can't stand it that we have a chance here and we're not staying in our lane and being the meme club and laughing stock. Can only think it goes back to bitterness at the "foreign Arsenal" days even though these days half the team are English including England's best player. You'd think those in charge would want it to be shown that the league is competitive and the nation state human rights abusers can sometimes be beaten. Fully expect we'll end up screwed out it somehow.

Yeah, we're all going to feel the grip of that vise once we get into the run of matches that follow our league fixture against Liverpool. From City through to Brighton is a brutal run, eh ...

Gotta say though I can't imagine why you'd be worried about the emotions or mentality of this Arsenal, we look about as strong and fearless on that front as we've ever been: we go into every match with a plan, and relative to last season, we're better and better at getting ourselves back on track after a setback.
