Gundogan isn't the profile we should target but he'll easily be one of our best players if he joins. Definitely not over the hill.

He was a huge part of the reason City won the title this season. Regularly the man who popped up with the key goal to break down stubborn defences. We should absolutely sign him if we get the opportunity, unless there's someone almost as good who is a lot better value, which strikes me as unlikely. Gundogan would give us a serious chance at winning the title next season.

Rice + Mount + Gundogan on a 2 year deal (allegedly this is what he's asking City for) would be amazing business if we can manage it and still do the other things we need.

We need a superior attacking option to Xhaka. That's Mount. We need a rotation option for Partey. That's Rice. Then Gundogan is a strictly superior version of Xhaka. I'm baffled by the ambivalence to this. If anything, it's way too good to be true. It would almost certainly be the most "ambitious" (for lack of a better word) thing we have ever done in the transfer market in club history.

DiabyKungFu Rice isn't suited to playing as a DM in a single pivot midifeld. He usually has Soucek covering him and letting him play more box to box. If we pay £90m for Rice and play him in Parteys role it'll be a huge waste of money. This feels like people just trying to squeeze Rice and Gundogan into a midfield together for the sake of it.

Gudogan is a great player but he’s in a team of beasts don’t forget.

I would sign him for a max one year deal. We cant be having Jorginho and Gundogan in the heart of our midfield in 2024 ffs

Mount I’m not too sure about - maybe he needs a new challenge and he’s young enough.

Rice is a an absolute yes from me. He will likely lift up a European cup in two weeks, would be good to have another winner in the team and not only that but someone who would have played a pivotal part in them winning a trophy esp as a captain.

What have we done that's more "ambitious"? That's two top signings (Rice and Mount) and one really, really good signing (Gundogan) all in roughly one area of the team. Ozil was just one signing. Sanchez was just one signing. Bergkamp was just one signing. Campbell was just one signing. Rice + Mount + Gundogan would certainly be more "ambitious" than any of those. That's not to say that it would work out better than all or even any of those signings (or any other number of signings you could mention). That's why I used the word "ambitious" for the point I was trying to make and put it in quotes. There's not necessarily a direct one-to-one mapping between something being "ambitious" and something being good.

To be somewhat more specific on what I meant about "ambitious", I mean something that makes you go "Holy shit! We're actually really putting all of our chips in here." We've built plenty of good teams but we're also pretty famous for never really putting all of our chips in*, so it's not as if there's a lot of historical competition here.

* For better or for worse. I think I'm more sympathetic to not putting all your chips in than a lot of people, for what it's worth.

DiabyKungFu OK I kinda get what you're saying, maybe in terms of numbers. Don't think it signals more intent/ambition than the others you mentioned though, certainly not Campbell who we beat half of Europe to.

Edit: the bit you added at the end is kinda what I felt when we were pursuing Reyes whilst we were in the middle of our unbeaten run having chased him since the previous year. Just pushed the boat out to add even more quality to the best team in the League.

Talk today of Liverpool and Man Utd having serious interest in Mount. With a year left on his contract I think the player will determine his next club.
