I have a feeling it isn't just on the pitch but off the pitch Jorginho is a very highly thought of player within the club. So definitely makes sense to keep him. He's shown this season that he is a very valuable member of the squad.

Not quite the last one, but surely it's to give us some certainty about moving him on. Canny decision, it takes the risk out of bigger business.

Partey has to go now. We need to replace him with someone more reliable. Jorginho has proven himself a quality squad player. Its all good.

If we were to keep Partey it should be on severely reduced wages or a pay as you play basis. Jorginho ideally would be Elneny's replacement and we get a proper CM to start alongside Rice.

i dont know why people think this is the end of Partey's time here. Jorginho is not a Partey replacement, he is a squad player, and cannot start game after game for us. (well, neither can partey). If Partey were to leave, we need to sign a direct replacement starter, not just another CM that can 'fill in'. Like others have said, Jorginho would take the Elneny role (albeit much better) but going into next season with him as a starter along with Rice and Ode, we are already putting ourselves at a disadvantage from the start.

USArsenal it may not turn out this way, but I think Ornstein recently wrote that only one of Partey and Jorginho was likely to stay beyond the summer.

Partey's already left. He's completed well under ten league matches. If we don't sign someone to "replace" him (that is, to actually play) heading into the season, especially with Havertz established at 9, we're mad.

Great news. Only a year is a good incentive for him to keep performing too.

Hopefully enables us to replace Partey this summer with a new starting midfielder who will have time to adapt.

The problem with replacing Partey is that his skillset isn't exactly common.

banduan The main skillset is availability and in last 4 seasons, if we assume he plays the next two games, he is averaging 23.75 PL appearances a season. He's on £200k a week which is too much for a part time player. No doubt on form he is one of our best players but we need players who give us 50+ appearances like Rice not someone who we are praying doesn't break down every week.

I think that’s why there’s so much interest in Bruno. He has a different style to Partey but he’s able to progress the ball as effectively. Less able to evade players with a drop of the shoulder but also less sloppy in possession.

lorddulaarsenal I don’t know if Partey is sloppy in possession. He has a high risk approach like Zinchenko. Which means they are both able to really open you up with a single pass. But this requires attracting a lot of pressure in high traffic areas. Saliba does the same thing, but he’s typically only marked by 1 person, not 2 or 3.

But as the team gets better - you have more players who are good on the ball - you need less hero ball. You just close the distances and progress the ball faster. So they are both really good, but less necessary when the level is raised

Partey's three difference making qualities (when on top form):

Athletic ability, positioning, recovery tackles.
Press resistance, and ability to carry the ball through midfield when needed.
Picking passes through the lines, and early release to wingers.

Bruno G has the first two, and one of the third - the pace on his release pass may not be on par.

In his favor however, he offers consistent goal threat from outside and around the box.

I'm happy to bring him in. Would transform our lock down defence into a veritable fortress. Think our press is hard to play against now? Adding him would make us an absolute nightmare.

flobaba also just makes us more resilient. Both he and Rice can play both the 6 and the 8 well, so we should have flexibility if one needs a rest to pop in Jorginho at 6 or ESR/Vieira/Havertz at 8.

Agreed that Partey is injured too often, and it is never for just a week of two, it is usually a month or 2, and then it takes him time to find his best form again. A fit and fully-firing Partey makes us even better, but the amount of time he is on full form is too small. I hate Bruno G, i think he's pretty much a thug, but he is also a pretty good player, and i'd rather him be our thug than someone else's. I doubt it will happen though. Newcastle will want a ton of money, like 80-90 mil. (even though his release clause is reported to be 100m). Can't see this happening.

Quite confident it will happen. Raicedo was potentially a thing for a while last summer and we only got half of that sorted. With Partey now very likely heading to Saudian shores, and Jorginho signed on, we should have the flex room to bid for Bruno. It's a matter of if he wants to come here (and on what sort of wages).
