I hope you are right as dont see many players around that can come in a do what he does straight away.. it asks a lot more of Rice than if partnered with a more mobile DM but that is kind of Rice's thing. Still need an understudy who will need to make a significant contribution next season if Partey is sold.. maybe that's Lokonga

Just realised Jorg is just 32. For some reason thought he was 35. Definitely could continue to play for us in the next few years.

Also he is Brazilian but has never played for any Brazilian club. His first youth team was already in Italy.

Clrnc if you want to like him even more, watch this interview he did with his mother. I think it might have been around the last euros. They chat about growing up, and how she recognised his talent, sent him to the beach to train. Just wonderful.

Are we extending his contract? Think we need him for another year if Partey goes. Can't see us replacing them both in 1 summer.

Really impressive, this cat in recent months:

1) He has cut out those painful and costly defensive errors

2) His experience and maturity is a really great attribute to have in the squad, specifically in the midfield.

3) Availability. Seems to be robust enough and able to stay fit enough to play week in and week out. That's gold at this stage of the season. Fingers crossed it stays that way.

Wonder how we will line up vs Bayern? Him or Partey? And wonder how we'll use Partey during the run in.

Goes to show how important having the right combination of players is too. Jorginho + Xhaka, not great, Jorginho + Rice, spot on. We need a Jorginho esque player to come in if want to add another mid.

I'm happy Jorginho is staying, largely because he seems like a good veteran presence. In terms of usefulness for the squad he works as the fifth midfielder on the 'depth chart', he's good for spells here and there but not much more than that.

IMO we need two other midfielders to complement Rice and Ødegaard: a pivot to replace Partey, someone like Zubimendi, and another 8 who can either play with Rice and Ødegaard or spell Ødegaard, whom we are dangerously reliant on at the moment. Havertz may have been seen as that latter player, but it turns out he's our starting center forward instead.

Sicario2 - Tier 1 similar thoughts. Partey still proved himself to be quite a high level mid when fit and if there's no big offers coming in we are better off keeping him.

The balance in midfield with him and Rice is very good.

I'm intrigued with what do we do with Sambi. He has looked great for Luton but as history shown normally we don't give players that Arteta banished another chance.

Clrnc the problem is we've seen enough to suggest he's not going to be able to keep fit and be reliable for us so we need to plan as if he's not going to be there what do we do.

True. I don't think any of us are seriously expecting Sambi to come back, but it seems to have been an excellent loan spell and with one, maybe two of our 30somethings in midfield going, perhaps there is space opening up for him at a time he's ready to fill it. Perhaps.

Obviously, being good enough for Luton isn't quite the same as being good enough for Arsenal. Time will tell, I guess.

Clrnc I’m a big Partey fan, when he’s fit. You can see that his quality on the ball is what we have missed in games where we can’t unlock defenses from the right wing.

That said, availability is an asset. He looked terrible ramping up after his injury, and still had to miss games as well to ensure he didn’t re-injure himself. That is such a cost to the team throughout. We’ve seen this over and over with him. Expecting different next year is lunacy. So I’d let him go and fill the spot

He looked great immediately when he came on against City. The rest are pure speculation to explain why he didn't play after that.

Clrnc If he was as good as you're making out, and he's fit, he would be in the team no doubt about it. So he's either not at that level, or he's not at that fitness.

He's just not cut out at the top level any more. Signs of his old sloppiness against Spurs again in the first half too being robbed of possession after dilly-dallying on the ball too long in front of the defence. We got away with it because it's Spurs but a good team would have punished sloppiness like that.

You're thinking of City away last season, Clarence is talking about City at home this season.

I think it's time to cut loose - it was probably time last summer to be fair. He's a brilliant footballer, but I remember arguing with someone on Twitter when we signed him. I was so excited, but this person was saying Partey was not a value signing given his age. It would be very hard to go back to that person now & argue Partey has represented anything like value in the four years he's been here.

Declan Rice may be able to learn the more ambitious parts of Partey's game, he may not, or Arteta may not want him to, but what he has done is ensure that we haven't really missed Partey this season. And we won't next season.

Think I'm one of Partey's biggest fans when it comes to his footballing abilities. He provides qualities that no one else in the squad comes close to replicating with his press resistance and tendency to be able to free up Saka and play passes between the lines.

All that said,

1) this is the what? third? season running he has crashed out due to injuries, and destabilized our midfield/made us have to adapt without him. He is more unavailable than Davido.

2) It's a real shame we have to have a player with the sort of cloud over his head that he's got. The man is an alleged rapist. It makes me uncomfortable to watch each and every time he is out there playing for Arsenal. Needs to go for this alone, in my opinion.

3) We can probably still get some good value for him at this time. If we keep/extend him, we are basically destroying that value, whatever it is.

4) Best to identify and bring his replacement in now (summer), and have whatever midfield rejig is needed started earlier than later.

If it wasn't for 1), I'd say whatever transfer fee we could get for him would be so low because of his injuries (unless Saudi came in for him) that it'd be worth keeping him for another season as long as we'd sign a new midfielder and not rely on his fitness.

RocktheCasbah I think thats true on Rice but not in the way many expected. He gelled very well with Jorginho which is where we really managed to cover Parteys absence. Its just annoying now that you can see how good Partey plus Rice is and we've not had it much all season. And we can tell ourselves we haven't missed it but if we are a single point off the title then every little thing we missed this season is going to feel fucking huge.

Thats all the more reason to replace Partey though. We need a reliable player to fill that Partey/Jorginho slot and really bed in and develop the understanding with Rice and Odegaard that will take us to yet another level.
