It's entirely possible to be past it as a player. In fact, every player will become so at some point. Unless you're arguing with someone who thinks Jorginho has never been a good player, this isn't relevant.

He's an excellent football player who's athletically limited at this point in his career. He needs a bit of protection. Rice provided it today and both Jorge and Rice had great games.

He is not past it just not very physically imposing. He can play like this until he is 36 plus.

Seems a decent solution to our challenges with vertical passing. We’ve lost that with Xhaka/Partey out and Zinchenko playing more conservatively.

He works well in big games when other teams press up field. He can help break the lines, and he doesn’t get caught upfield (like he can vs deep sitting teams).

He would work just as well in 'small' games. It just changes the dynamic of the midfield entirely which I have wanted to see for most of the season..

The issue is that he is physically not at the top level so we will need to really manage his minutes for the rest of the season

Daz Quite funny there's tangible enthusiasm for Havertz up front after yesterday. We're talking about a guy who scores every five or six hours he's on the pitch. He makes Giroud seem as prolific as Messi.

Burnwinter it's more that Havertz is about as average a finisher as Jesus is on current form but also does a few extra bits which seem to particularly unsettle defenders. Giroud would be the best striker at the club these days.

Burnwinter I thought he was pretty bad yesterday. He worked hard and barged into defenders a lot but he was shocking on the ball. His first touch is awful. He missed a 1 on 1 and was lucky Saka put it right. Breaks moves down too often for my liking.

That's because for me, the end justifies the means. That's why I don't get hell bent over Jesus's profligacy. Since he joined, our attack has improved massively. I don't really care if he only scores 12 times if the attack he's spearheading scores 88.

And with Havertz yesterday, the attack just worked.

It is a bit funny isn't it. I do appreciate some of what Kai brings, but we need to be honest here, that "shot" he took that fortunately rebounded to Saka was an atrocious effort. We can't have someone with such poor finishing play regularly as our striker and expect to win the league.

Qwiss Thought the contrast between what Havertz did when he got released down the left and what Trossard did in the same space was pretty stark - all of Trossard's touches, three big, 2 small and then the finish were perfect, Havertz on the other hand...

anyone think we should stick with the rice-jorgi pivot? rice does enough water carrying to protect jorgi in defensive transitions, which is the main issue with him.

if you look at the sequence of passing that led up to the first goal, it stemmed from one touch passing in our own half with jorgi at the heart of it. it reminded me of how we opened teams up last season with partey or jorgi at 6. it's what's been largely missing this season.

Gazza M I'm not sure how fit Jorginho is and whether he is able to play every game, we might have to rotate with Kai until (or maybe I should say IF) Partey comes back.

In these big games though having Jorginho not just from a technical point of view but a tactical makes sense. Even when he is a sub he is constantly shouting out instructions on the pitch, again yesterday he was making sure players were aware of what was required and help keep us switched on.

Single biggest reason why our football changed this season. Too many half baked concocted theories about control ball, and 80 degree vertical perpendicular somersault tactics when football in a lot of ways is a very simple game.

You have a guy who can pass through the lines who will create dangerous high quality attacks vs a guy who doesn't take as many risks and prefers passing wide. Interchanging the two will have different ramifications for the type of football we see.
