Think this would be mistake, gives me memories when kante was around and we decided we didn't need that type of player. That area of midfield is important and we need to build for the future. Party isn't it at he won't last a season and Caicedo demonstrated he could play in other positions as well which is good for general depth

Would be odd to give up on Caicedo to sign Havertz, not in anyway comparable. What may be happening is we've done a deal with Chelsea to let them have a free run at Caicedo and they let us have Havertz.

If we wanted an option like Caicedo in the squad it makes me think we would look elsewhere instead. Or what could be happening is it was always Rice OR Caicedo and we're confident of signing Rice.

But negotiating a deal with Brighton will not be easy, as owner Tony Bloom is understood to value the 21-year-old as high as £120 million.

While there is no prospect of a club paying that much for Caicedo, Chelsea will certainly have to pay well over £80 million to land the Ecuador international or agree to allow a player to move in the opposite direction.

So it was always probably:

6: Rice/Caicedo

If they're asking for £120m now (which only one unreliable source claims) then they could've done so without the extension as well.

HomeSteak That's a bit longer to be fair, but I've still never heard about clubs lowering their demands because a player "only" has three years left on his deal. That's usually only a matter of discussion when the player is down to one or two years.

See Rice who has two years left. Clubs can always wait until that.

I don’t think £120m is anything but a bargaining position (if it’s even true), but the deal made their intentions clear imo. They’re going to dig their heels in and make you pay with blood.

Funny enough, I had kinda been warming to the idea of Caicedo as an inverted fullback over the past couple of days. However, the idea that Rice and/or Caicedo were attacking players or that we wanted to replace Xhaka with a non-attacker never made an iota of sense to me.

This is the way I have seen it too. personally think Caicedo would be a fucking revelation in that role. Built for it on so many levels. Real shame if we miss out... As a pure 6, don't think there is much between them.

Rice is a decent option to have in the 8 when needed in certain games/situations but if we are serious about being an attacking team we need a much smarter attacking footballer to occupy that area.. Can see Martinelli hitting 20 goals easy if we play someone like Trossard there consistently.. Having Caicedo as an inverted fullback would enable us to do that without compromising the defence imo

Not sure I understand the question. What is "either/or"? Rice and Caicedo? Like I was getting at, I think it could potentially work with Rice at 6 and Caicedo at inverted fullback. In the 3-2-5, Rice and Caicedo are definitely suited for the 2 in the middle. Never in a million years are they part of the 5 and never in a million years should we go away from the 3-2-5. We had the most touches in the opponent's penalty area and conceded the second fewest. Our midfield setup was great. Improvement is mostly going to come from being better in either box.

Getting a tad caught up in the hype. He’s consistent and you’d be buying for the future but no way is he worth the amount touted.

His game is plucky and his peak is a fair bit lower than Partey’s

They are all at most worth 50-60m. Just stupid inflation currently in English league and only English league.

"Both positions" as in fullback and 6? If so, I agree. 6 and 8? I don't see that except in the last 10-15 minutes of games we're trying to lock down or (at a stretch) the second leg of a European knockout round that we're actively trying to draw 0-0. I definitely agree that there's a non-zero value to versatility. That's probably where some of the apparent enthusiasm for Havertz comes from.
