Mirth Absolutely, we still need another winger if we want to compete across 4 tournaments.

Liverpool did it (literally 4 finals) with less last year:

Salah - Saka
Jota - Jesus
Mane - Martinelli
Firmino - Trossard
Diaz - ESR
Origi - Nelson

On top of that we have one of Eddie/Balogun and Vieira who can play on the right too.

I sense that Arteta is more Pep than Klopp in wanting tons of depth, but I personally think we have more than enough. I guess you could argue that we should sell 2 or 3 of those and go for someone 'elite', but I reckon you'd just end up paying a lot of money for someone with less talent than ESR and I don't think I'm being sentimental.

goon you can’t compare the Liverpool and Arsenal teams. One of those teams was filled to the brim with veterans at or just past their peak. We have the second youngest team in the league.

Dropping out of Europa was a blessing. Our last two league games we put 7 past Palace and Fulham, yet really struggled with a rotated team against a 4th placed team from a small league. Clearly the upper end of our team is incredible but we just don’t have the depth. And it was absolutely going to come to a head if we made the QFs and SFs where we would need to make difficult choices about squad rotation once we were facing teams like Juve and United. Do you play Partey vs United/Juve and rest him in the league where City leaves no margin for error?

There are ₄ players right now we cannot afford to find ourselves in this quandary over: Partey, Saka, Odegaard and Gabriel. And Saliba now that Tomi is done.

MistaT Yep, I wanted Vieira for Xhaka to try to regain some fluidity but it turns out it was Trossard for Nketia that helped us find our gear. Love his tenacity, hopefully he gets some of the goals his performances deserve.

£21m plus add-ons was an absolute deal for this guy. If he can sustain his current level he's one of the most dynamic creative players in the league.

Definitely. I think Wenger knew the same with his occasional bids on the likes of Vardy or whoever.

It is interesting though that we've tracked Trossard for years and only just pulled the trigger, he evidently could've been a key player for us for several seasons by now. I guess Smith Rowe's fitness issues were part of the decision.

There must be some trait about Trossard that's regarded as a negative, not sure what though. The fact he was "rescued" to some extent after his falling out with De Zerbi seems part of his sky high motivation to prove a point since joining.

Claudius I completely agree with regards to the midfield given Partey age, injury record etc. which is why I'm advocating our focus goes there. Same with a Holding upgrade maybe given the drop off levels though you could argue White/Tomi is enough especially if we sign Fresneda or someone along those lines.

The forward line/creative 8s has more than depth there for me though and I don't see their age as a problem personally.

Btw, I so think to an extent some folks underestimate just how much better our elite players are than everyone else. Like Saka, Partey and Odegaard are not just marginally better than opponents and alternatives. The alternatives we put in just can’t replicate the 2 way threat they bring. Again I refer to how with these 3 on in extra time we achieved as much PPDA as we had in regular time versus SCP.

Rotation sounds great on paper but if you’re not replacing all or most of that talent, your level falls a lot.

Claudius you should add Martinelli to you underrated elite player list. He's 21 and has one goal less than the hugely celebrated Rashford and Marty has an assist more than Rashford too. He's top drawer.

goon yeah. Two mids need to come in by next summer. I would rather we went all out and got one great young midfielder this summer. Im sure there will be a lot of angst if it isn’t 2, but we need one now.

And then decide way forward for defenders.

Qwiss Martinelli also has 5 xA with only two assists to show for it. To put it in perspective, that's a higher xA than Saka who has 10 assists. If xA means xG from shots following their passes, that's quite a big difference.

I dunno about Martinelli. To quote RtC, he's a bit "head down" with a "destructive, pedal to the metal" style of play and questionable decision-making.

Nah just kidding, let's be real—also, sorry RtC, I know you didn't mean it.

At 21 Martinelli is already clearly one of the best forwards in our league, and his goal against Palace showed why the hypothesis he might one day go central a lot of the time has a few merits.

He's not quite Saka or Ødegaard level, sure, maybe, for now. Given we still haven't found his ceiling, it's bloody amazing we have him tied down on a long term till 2027 or even beyond.

Funnily enough, I thought of you whilst I was in the Clock End on Sunday watching Martinelli ripping it up out there and I thought, yeah, maybe he is better than I give him credit for. He certainly was in the first half, at any rate. However, I do believe my "head down" criticism of him is valid, I don't see that as a negative as it's something that can be worked on and what makes Martinelli really exciting is the thought of how truly terrifying he will be once those rough edges in his game are smoothed out.

He scored a brilliant goal on Sunday and what was so good about it was how unsurprising it was, as soon as he lined up the shot just below me, the conclusion seemed inevitable.

But can I just say, to answer your burn, that memories are short around here. Emile Smith Rowe is a fucking quality footballer and the only concern anyone should really have about him are related to physical robustness, not actual ability.

RocktheCasbah I beg to differ Paul. Obviously Smith Rowe has talent but he lacks pausa, and the intricacy our play calls for. He’s more about playing at a high intensity with a direct style
