The harmony @RowJimmy is talking about, as part of which the club has been looking after players slightly beyond its obligations, is an important reason we're retaining players. If we weren't retaining players we wouldn't be competitive.

I used to believe this type of stuff. Then Liverpool totally fucked over Luis Suarez and nothing untoward came of it from their end as far as player recruitment and everything else is concerned. I do not believe people are actually motivated by this "goodwill" stuff in practice.

DiabyKungFu Fair enough. After watching us try to renew important players from about 2009–2019 I'm enjoying this decade. Our players tell other players they love being at Arsenal. This helped us sign Zubimendi and Gyökeres and save money on both. It creates a positive scene for Nwaneri, Skelly, Dowman and the rest. Let's see if the big boys renew now.

DiabyKungFu that's my read on it as well. They are just out to take advantage as much as possible. There are no boss/worker analogies between clubs and players in football. Players are corporate entities as much as a club is. I feel like its like picking sides between insurance companies determining fault in a car accident while ignoring the people paying the premiums (fans) or the actually precarious workers (office staff, gunnersauri, etc.).
