I've been trying to figure this but this move is literally indefensible. Actually appalling we have found ourselves in this position where we are literally giving him a pay rise to keep him happy because we aren't signing anyone.

I've got no problem with Trossard, imo has been a good signing but last season he was well off it and now was the best time to move on. We paid a reasonable fee on him, got 2.5 seasons out of him and if we had to sell him for _£15m-£20m it would have been acceptable.

That is our window done imo, players might leave but we ain't signing anyone. What a disappointing end after all the good and hard work done this window.

Was reading today that Arteta sees Jesus as an option for the left too. So he’ll probably wait to see how he turns out before investing big in a new left sided attacker

Right, he was acting the prima donna at Brighton before we signed him, and will not coast serenely along if he's not looked after.

From Trossard's perspective he's a great talent who spent his career at lesser clubs and is now at risk of being shelved at Arsenal. He's supposed to be moving to secure more minutes, more years and a final substantial payday at some other decent club.

From our perspective Trossard's the left-sided forward Jorginho, he's a fringe player who fills a couple of positions in our depth chart. We're presumably compensating him for the likelihood he'll play 1,500 minutes in 25–26 and be 30+ looking for his last gig when he gets to.

"We're just giving him more money for the sake of it" doesn't stack up. Can we avoid making "Arsenal's leadership is dumber than a Brendan Rodgers motivational envelope" the explanation for everything that happens ... as a treat?

I'm not so sure about that. He played a lot last season and despite being frustrating towards the end of the season he was quite productive. 8 goals and 8 assists is the sort of productivity that some people around lose their minds about not signing.

I think he'll be decent again this season I just don't see the need to pay him more. We throw wages at players for no good reason. Maybe @Klaus is right and there is some sort of clause in there, that makes the most sense to me. Or maybe Bayern offered him a wage hike and we met it because Arteta wanted to keep him.

I think ultimately we'll have to see next summer what happens to really judge whether hanging onto him is a good or bad move. Maybe we've had a Zubimendi type situation behind the scenes where we were told a deal could be done next summer for someone who would really improve the left wing.

Qwiss Nah, I agree with you on all that. Always thought Trossard would be the one we kept and we'd sell Gabi for the cash if we could get a decent bag.

You can get an inkling very few fans are fully committed to any of the options we've discussed on left wing just by way of remarking even Martinelli's haters haven't been demanding Martinelli gets sold.

Qwiss I think it's impossible to ignore that some of the deals and wages we do are stupid. Even for players you could say play a part in the squad the wages we give are so disconnected and it's why we constantly get stuck with players when we try to move them on.

A lot of these players don't want to leave. We pay well, we're in London, there's a lot of harmony in the squad. Overall that's a good thing - it makes players want to play for us.
Of the various things I'd like the club to be good at, "good at selling" is near the bottom.
And I can't say it makes me sad when our players get some of Stan's money. The extent to which fans identify with the owners in these discussions (ie a "good contract" is one that is better for the owner than for the player) always strikes me as weird.

The extent to which people say stuff like this while ignoring the main point of caring about wages and transfer fees (that there's an upper limit to both) strikes me as disingenuous.

RowJimmy no one here gives a single fuck about Stan or his money.

We care that wages make it hard to move on from players, and that has a rolling effect on squad numbers, game day bench, squad harmony, and our ability to meet PSR standards when signing new players.

Trossard, Jesus, and Zinchenko are 100% hindering us from signing new players - if not this last window, in future windows.

Think a bit harder about it though. Investing an increment in Trossard can have a positive impact on how much good football we're getting for the money we're spending in aggregate.

The harmony @RowJimmy is talking about, as part of which the club has been looking after players slightly beyond its obligations, is an important reason we're retaining players. If we weren't retaining players we wouldn't be competitive.
