Most important trait he has for me is his leadership qualities.

We go away to City/Anfield, this guy will hopefully ensure our heads don’t drop.

Also, he is a big name English player, so hopefully we will get less questionable decisions from the ref’s. He will also have protection like Kane so we don’t have to worry about him getting penalised etc

yeah with Rice we've filled up the pashun meter again given Xhaka's imminent departure. I don't really think we need more of that; I'd prefer low pulse, seasoned players coming in from here on to be honest but that won't happen. Team really needs a few sources of less emotion.

HomeSteak yeah very low numbers in volume and success rate with progressive passing. Doesn't score a lot either which is why I didn't quite understand why people would have him at an 8 position. Sure could see it happening here and there, and Rice of the future ought not to look like Rice up to now, but hopefully won't be the default.

flobaba I just did one of Partey vs Rice passing stats for last season. Rice looks stronger in most respects.

Not according to the same website for both players across the 22/23 PL season.

Partey has a higher volume of passes per 90, has quite a higher number of progressive passes (through balls, passes in opposition half, and forward passes) as well as general passes (forwards, backwards, left, right etc like you'd expect from a "metronome"), he has more duels attempted (arial and ground), more duels won (both arial and on ground). Partey even has a higher number of takes ons completed per 90 and more than 20% higher success rate in doing so. He also won more than double the number of free kicks.

Rice has quite a lot more long balls and crosses attempted and completed than Pertey, is also completes more own half passes than him. He has a slightly better passing accuracy (87.98 vs 88.05) has a lower rate of misplaced short passes, concedes only half the number of freekicks as Partey and has more clearances, interceptions and blocks.

Rice is a good player who may even step up a level after joining us, but Partey, when fit and on form, is one of the best CMs in world football. At pretty much almost every aspect. If we replace him with Rice, it'll take some tweaks and changes to get us to find a way for it to work but Partey brings a huge, huge amount to our game.

Honestly all that tells me is that Partey played for Arsenal while Rice played for West Ham under Moyes and his style of football. If Rice tried to play like a metronome, Moyes would probably fine him a week’s wages.

Maybe. What it definitely doesn't show is that Rice's is stronger in most passing stats or that he's shown he's capable of doing everything Partey does for us in terms of our buildup play or dominance on the ball as I've seen suggested on here.

Who knows, he might have it in his locker, and he might actually be able to pull it off in a better team, or with better coaching. What he's shown so far in terms of what he actually excels at however, is his defensive numbers and ability to drive and get forward with the ball rather than his passing (be it controlled possession passing or progressive passing).

The Partey to Rice comparison doesn't flatter Rice, but it will in three years. That's before you factor in average availability in the present.

Rice has to earn his place and is not a massive upgrade, but if he gets on track, he becomes another vital player among a group we hope will challenge for honours for several seasons.

If both Partey and Xhaka leave, we need another defensively minded midfielder, but we're still in the market.

I wouldn't necessarily say it doesn't flatter Rice, it's just that they're different types of players. Partey hasn't (to my knowledge) ever had the defensive stats Rice does, and I don't think Rice will have Partey's eye for a progressive pass in three years either.

Similarly Partey doesn't have Rice's ball carrying stats. Not sure how useful that is as a 6, but for sure it will be useful in certain situations.

Rice's passing is good enough in its own right even if it doesn't live up to Partey's lofty standards.

I reckon the bigger concern is if he'll be able to replicate Partey and Jorginho's ability to receive the ball under pressure from the back.

Big Willie I think Flobs mentioned it best but the reason we're signing Timber and Rice etc is to make us far more press resistant than we are currently. We've long since said the likes of Liverpool and City aren't that hard to get at once you can get past their press and having players that can beat the first line means that it'll be more about pass selection rather than crafting the perfect through ball for players like Rice.

Partey is quality. Both players are. Difference being that Rice is much more of a sure thing as a total package.

His passing is underrated massively.

good post big Willie. people are a little to quick to rewrite parteys narrative here. rices progressive carries outnumber parteys, but will rice be given as much license to bomb forward in a midfield with odehaard and havertz? you're somewhat neutering much of what's great about rice if you limit his scope to carry the ball forward. this is why I envisioned him more as an 8, dominating the left channel and the middle third of the pitch, covering zinchenko defensively, with full license to raid forward and provide a superior version of xhakas forward play. him and partey would patrol and control the best midfields in England imo. I hope partey stays so we at least have this as an option for tougher away games

Given that suffocating attacking setup we sometimes exercised last year, and the aspiration to become fledged ball dominant, game controlling side, I would like think he'll have good movements to carry the ball forward as a 6. Especially against deep blocks, causing havoc and once pressed, releasing to the vacant man. I thought I saw Rodri and Stones do this plenty in the Spring. Ball carrying qualities to me are eclipsed by a lack of scoring threat, and inability for penetrative passing under high pressure and congested zones.

One also has to consider that Rice hasn't been playing in a side as good as ours. It will be interesting to compare the statistics after a full, reasonably uninterrupted season for him here.

Partey's outstanding quality was how early he passed when he was at it. Never dwelled on the ball. I am not sure Rice has that in him despite some outstanding qualities he has shown. I am confident we will adjust. Havertz is being doubted but he is very creative, a huge upgrade on Xhaka in this regard. The early pass is great but if we can unlock the creativity from Havertz, Odegaard, Saka as we pin teams in their third, we won't miss it much, a lot like creative Wenger teams. If anything, Wenger could have done with a player like Rice behind his attackers.

i have less doubt about havertz than i do rice. i can see him thriving with the way the role was used last season. and even if xhaka only had those chances because the opposition wanted them to fall to him instead of bigger threats then that means with them focusing on havertz more and not giving those chances away there will be more room to operate for saka and martinelli.

RocktheCasbah when we signed Partey he was proven CL and LaLiga monster. Rice hasn't reached those levels yet.

For 22 games a season, sure. Rice is being signed to give us much more durability than that.
