Havertz doesn't need Rice to play well - that would be odd, I agree. But Havertz and Rice are being bought to play a particular system that's fairly aggressive and requires fine margins to work. If Rice falls through, we'll have to re-think that system even if we do sign a Barella or even a Caicedo. And as a result Havertz will have to be re purposed. That isn't to say Havertz would then be useless because we could, hypothetically, use him as a number 10 or whatever - as long as it's not striker.
In the same way, White was bought as a CB to play in a different sort of team and then had to be repurposed. The fact that he adapted well meant that no one asked any questions but we definitely got a bit fortunate with that.
