We made a fair offer. He's not worth much more. I don't know why, but I never could see him in an Arsenal shirt.

His progressive passing is also non-existent, though I understand he progresses the ball by dribbling with it.

Don't see him getting much gametime at City because of his passing but I am sure we can sign at least 1 very good midfielder with our Rice money.

That City rumour was always nonsense, clubs don't just come in and bid an extra 30m out of kindness - certainly not City who are normally quite sensible.

Worth remembering that it suits West Ham to paint in image that they're getting pissed off and that Rice could change his mind. They've been leaking City's interest since the start.

Sicario2 - Tier 1 If they've got a price they won't go over it, even if it means they lose the player. It is the best way to be especially when people know you've got the money.

I also think its silly to say we waited too long etc If we'd made a bid close to what WHU wanted last week City would have come in last week.

Feels like a lot of guff about nothing.

Either he goes to City for a (very) stupid amount of money and was never that interested in joining us, in which case there are other comparable options (some of which are cheaper) available on the market (currently).

Or if he is genuinely interested in joining, we'll probably secure him regardless of City's interest.

Don Pacifico this feels like rationalizing to yourself in order to not be disappointed. Either he goes to us and you're happy, or he goes to City for slightly more money and it's a "very stupid amount of money"..?

Like Qwiss said, it will probably come down to him. It's not like City suddenly need to pay much more than what we're willing to.

I'm in the same camp as Clrnc in that I think he'd be a good addition but I'm not emotionally tied to him joining us to the extent that I wouldn't be happy with bringing in our 2nd/3rd choice. He's a very good player who I'd be more than happy to have at the club but we have options if he doesn't. I feel pretty sanguine about it all.

Pepe LeFrits Saw this and got a deja vu with the Mudryk deal. Arteta connection was very strong with him, personally convinced him and talked to him for over a year (very similar to Rice) then got forced to join another club. That was for political reasons but just had a similar feeling.

Anyway am I the only one not worried about this? Of course Gundogan leaving has made City come in for this but Rice is not that special to be that worried. He is a good player, that's about it. We have PLENTY of options in the market to buy. Just don't wait until Tonali, Barella, Caicedo etc all get snapped up by others and you lose out on Rice.

Clrnc I like Caicedo more than Rice, but I'm still worried in case we won't get any of the best alternatives. If it ends up a Jorginho situation where we go for an underwhelming and cheap option, I'd much rather overpay for Rice.

Clrnc there aren't many top options in the market though. based in how we approach these high ticket transfers, the negotiations for the likes of caicedo will probably go the same way as last time. it's sound business to have a valuation that you stick to, but repeatedly missing on top targets when you're close to being a legit competitor for titles will see you looking back in 10 years playing the old could-shoulda-woulda game

Clrnc He is a good player, that's about it. We have PLENTY of options in the market to buy. Just don't wait until Tonali, Barella, Caicedo etc all get snapped up by others and you lose out on Rice.

But all those players you've cited aren't interchangeable - they won't play the same role as Rice even if they're all equally good. If we sign Tonali or Barella for example, it doesn't make sense to sign Havertz and we need to go back to the drawing board which could see us wasting the window.

Rice would be amazing for City.

I'm still confident that he'll be swayed by Arteta's long-term admiration, and would have had it laid out to him lojg ago exactly how Arteta will build a midfield around him, but Guardiola would be a hard man to turn down if he sits down and tells you exactly how you're going to fit into his team.

Both managers would make a superstar out of him... I really hope he has his heart set on coming here. 😬

Unfortunately it looks like West Ham have played a blinder in getting top dollar for him.

We, to be fair, have acted quickly but it seems all we've done is drive up the price for City to pay, and if Rice is offered a further 50-100k to be with Gaurdiola's city it might be too hard for him to turn down.
