It could also be that the attacking signings we wanted rejected us, it could be that the ones willing to join want a wage we can't afford, it could be that the selling club wants a transfer fee we can't afford, it could be that the management haven't found alternative options beyond the primary options, it could be anything.

That all boils down to either finances or desire. If the finances are there and the desire is there, then we get the man. If we can't for one reason or another, then we should have the desire to fill that need by having backup options like we did when signing Ramsdale when we couldn't get Raya and when we signed Raya when he was available even though we already bought the backup option. Or when we missed out on Martinez and got Timber or when we ended up with Tomiyasu in a similar situation. When we have a need in the squad that has been identified Arteta has not shied away from making a signing and if that signing either failed or did not happen then move on the a replacement or the backup option.

So yes we lacked the desire to get someone in for the striker position. If not then we couldn't get them for financial reasons. Or like @Coombs said, maybe it was a mixture of the two.

So finances and desire. Not everyone can have one of the top 5-10 attackers in the world. But you can certainly buy guys in the top 20-50 range. If you can't get a Thierry Henry, R9, Messi, Lewandoski, then at least get a Wiltord, Hasselbaink, Fowler, Crespo, Higuain. If we're takking about now, if you can't get the likes of Haaland, Mbappe, Salah, Vinicius, then go for the not quite WC but decent and/or up and coming strikers like Toney, Duran, Jota, Sesko, Gyokeres, Marmoush.

Anything but Jesus and Havertz regularly starting for us and consistently showing up and chilling outside the box. And when they do end up inside the box and suddenly end up on the end of a chance they miss it. Never thought I'd see the day where I'd pine for Mr "11 League Goals Giroud" over our strikers but I think I'm almost there.

Big Willie I know situations like this well. I also think its possible to have these tendencies, but to mitigate them such that it doesn't get too extreme. Age can make it worse or better, depending.

I do think Arteta is self aware, and that he probably has intentional strategies he uses to cope.

I really do home so. Arteta is a really good manager. It would be a shame if he put together 80% of a great team then fails to follow up on that last 20% because he constrains himself to finding a unicorn striker who will both be a monster in attack and will completely submit to him and sacrifice himself for the team like Havertz and Jesus do (all the while racking up crazy numbers). There aren't many Sakas around who have that kind of end product and humbleness whilst following the defensive instructions and requirements we demand of our forwards.

I'm all for signing forwards and some of the guys you mentioned, but the last thing we need are more top 20-50 forwards. We need a top 10-20 forward or one with that potential.

Odegaard, Saka, and Martinelli would play brilliantly off him, though that would require Arteta to let them come infield……

MistaT I'm convinced the only reason we went for Šeško at all was the market opportunity created by his contract situation. Otherwise we'd have just paid more and got him.

Claudius we are saying sure, we'll take him for his release and bump his wages up, and his agent is thinking nah, we can do better. Let's re-sign with Red Bull on a similar wage bump (and likely some sweet multi-club-model sweeteners) and make bank on a bigger transfer later.

Somewhat agree, but I have to say, top strikers in the top 20-50 range are still better than what we've got. Jesus and Havertz will be lucky if they are in the top 100 in the world. Despite whatever rhatever random number they are though, my point is if we can't get the best if the best, lets at least go get the best of those in the tier below. That is if we really do think we need upgrades.

If we can't afford what it takes to get those players, or even worse, if we can afford it but are unable to tempt them into joining, then we have bigger issues than I thought.

Gurgen nobody can convince me that it would be better to bring on Kieran Tierney for Jorginho in the dying embers of extra time in an FA cup match against Manchester United than an actual striker, even if that striker was Joshua Zirkzee.

I don't wish this exercise on anyone, but if you can list 50 better forwards than Havertz, Martinelli and Trossard (granted, this season's version is absolute trash), I will eat my hand.
