Getting £70m for a player who you may not see in your long term plans is also brilliant business for them. Lewis, whilst fairly poor against us, does look fantastic. And Ake has been playing well.

70 million euro, not GBP. Is it a mandatory buy option? They might not take it up if he doesn't recover his form, which would be the ideal outcome. It's a big chunk of change for a full-back who will be 29 by the summer.

Yeah does feel like something you'd just agree to so you can get the loan over the line.

City have been very good at selling at the right time though. Inflated commercial deals aside, it's one of the reasons why they've been able to keep net spend lower.

that move is kinda surprising for bayern. 70m for someone who will be 29 when the buy option kicks in. to me that's more of a reflection of how crazy inflated the market is than even us bidding 70+m for unproven 21 year olds.

Meatwad A high option to buy isn't any worse than not having one at all. Unless it's mandatory, those clauses can only be beneficial for the club that's loaning.

Wasn't aware that he's just played 17 matches for Benfica, that's an insane number of games to raise his price from 10m to 120m, especially in the Portuguese league. Sure, he's played in the WC as well, but it's not like that's the highest standard either and even in that tournament I wouldn't exactly put him in the team of the tournament.

I guess the amount of information clubs have on players now is completely different than before. 20m players seem like bigger gambles than guys like Enzo and Moises. You just pay what it takes to get these guys.

KingslandBarge Nah it's not a bad investment for a club like Everton. He was excellent for Palace last season, scores goals and works hard. Young, England international too.

The detail not mentioned there is that they'd have to continue to sell a player for £40m every year for 7 years to cover not making a loss under FFP.

Clrnc This whole amortisation wheeze only works if the level of fees continues to explode, so some clubs will keep on with it. But arithmetically there's no way out of it for them unless in seven years clubs like Everton are willing to pay them £200m for players like Gallagher.

QuincyAbeyie or we could just look like we tried. We tried Jesus, Zinchenko, Trossard etc and got them. We seem to have tried Mudryk and failed. I’d be surprised if other non-doping clubs out there have a 100% hit rate on these things.

Claudius so you ignored half of my post where I explicitly stated that the reason we look stupid if we don't get him is because Brighton have made it clear that he's not for sale, which wasn't the case in any of the players you mentioned? Kind of the prerequisite for my entire post.

If we get him, fantastic, and as you say that would mean Edu was right in that it wasn't a waste of time because there was a conversation to be had. But if we don't it will look stupid that we've spent all this time on small increases because (and please don't ignore this part) that would simply mean that Brighton's very public leaks that these tiny increases wouldn't work were true and that there was nothing more to it.

Pepe LeFrits yeah, theres no cheat code. Boehly isn’t some evil genius who’s the first one in the league to figure out longer contracts mean you can spread costs thinner. He’s just the only one irresponsible enough to do it.

It’s a big gamble, especially for a club who looks like they’re about to lose out on CL revenue.

They already the biggest player amortisation by far in the PL and that was in the summer. This stuff will catch up with them. The only way this turns out to be a good idea is if all these transfers pan out. Good luck getting Auba, Sterling, Koulibary off your books btw.

Pepe LeFrits and that’s only for this season’s spending. Reset the clock and up it to £60m+ if they want to keep spending and using long contracts next season. It’ll catch up with them. Goon pointed out lack of CL revenue, that could crush them.

This isn't the only possible scenario. It's just as likely that Brighton are lying pricks, privately and publicly.
