We signed Jesus, worse signing than Darwin and it's not even a debate. He's had a better 3 seasons and they'll be able to cash in on him.

Haaland, Lewa, Raphina, Mane all moved too. Ekitike was going out on loan. Loads of opportunities that year. We signed, Jesus, Vieira, Zinchenko and Turner 🤦🏻‍♂️

I know that transfer window looks worse than it felt at the time but, honestly, I’m happy with it. That group of players + Ramsdale got us back in the CL spots after several years in the wilderness. As far as I’m concerned that’s a success because we’ve now outgrown them. There’s a few players that moved that summer who are unquestionably better than Jesus and Zinchenko now but would not have got us back in the CL then.

There’s a lesson in there when we split hairs on whether we want Williams or Rodrygo or Eze. There’s a preference that we can express but ultimately the test is whether they represent an improvement on Martinelli and Trossard. If they pass the test, we should act and not worry too much.

Qwiss I'm talking about strikers specifically. Isak was the one we missed out on but even he had a fair amount of doubters judging by my recollection of the debate at the time.

Even so, the fact there were only 1-2 names who weren't yet established striking talent shows you the dearth of options we had at the time. I don't see it being all that different this summer.

I'm just puzzled over why so many Arsenal fans are content with signing potential instead of actual quality. I don't think it's a sound attitude. Where do people imagine this team is gonna be a year from now? What are the implications of that in terms of player retention? And so forth.

Mirth agree. I don't think its fair to throw retroactive shade on that summer, when it resulted in the best football we've played in the arteta era. I remember us looking dynamite in pre season and thinking 'we've found something here'.

Mirth I don't really buy the whole we needed them to get back stuff. Mostly it wasn't them. They just happened to be around while Saka came of age and we sorted out the defence. And it's poor if we've outgrown them but are still paying them big money.

The reality is we could have bought better players instead.

Spot on, we aren't debating two players we are debating our squad plus one or the other, along with our blatantly urgent need and potential to win the league right now, as in, in eleven months' time. We can do it.

However, all that urgency also means factoring in what can actually get done at what point of this window, in order to ensure a proper preseason and maximum points from the first 10 league match days. If Gyöku's mired in a dispute with Sporting then we might need to snatch at the surest option.

Agreed, don't think Jesus and Zinchenko made a huge difference that season. Jesus was "very good" for a couple of months but deep down we knew it was a purple patch.

Saliba and Gabriel formed the best CB partnership in the world, Ben White blossomed into one of the best fullbacks in the league and with Saka, Odegaard and Martinelli we had three attackers scoring and assisting for fun. Thought at the time the pundits hailing the Man City two for turning us around had no idea what they were talking about.

Don Pacifico How often is the market awash with "established" strikers. That's not how it works. There were loads of options then, there are loads now. Its about picking the right one. Gyokeres, Sesko, Ekitike, Delap, David, Osimhen, Cunha, Mbuemo, Pedro, Rashford, Leao, Nukunku, Mateta, Watkins, etc These are or were all available this summer. You may not like some of them but there are options. This dearth of strikers just isn't reality. And if you want established then push the boat and really test Newcastles resolve on Isak.

Qwiss I don't think Isak is attainable. Maybe will proven otherwise. But the rest of what you say makes sense. I hear we have Watkins as a fall-back. I would almost want us to just take Watkins and then focus all our energies on getting a good left wing. What a guy like Watkins also allows you to do is gamble more on the left wing, so someone like a Barcola becomes very interesting because you have a dependable veteran striker in Watkins.
It's not easy, but there are options for how we want to piece things together

Qwiss I think I haven't articulated myself well. We're basically in agreement, I think - in so much as there are options but the degree of certainty behind whether or not they'll deliver is much slimmer versus previous generations.

In years gone by, the likes of Aguero and Torres would be playing at a pre-Simeone era Atletico for a number of years before getting picked up by PL clubs. Comparably, now you're having to gamble a bit more on a couple of seasons in the Primeira Liga (Nunez & Gyokeres) etc.

Yes, there are options available this summer but I believe it's harder to get those decisions right because the talent pool of strikers is much narrower these days (presumably because the demands of a modern day striker are much more prohibitive) meaning you have to take more of a gamble on how likely X player will adapt to playing at the top level of football.

Claudius yeah there are plenty of options in both positions. Its about getting the right guys and the right balance between them. As you say Barcola is a lot more appealing with an experienced CF. Where as Barcola and Sesko would look a lot like we are looking to the future. Not easy but that's why the guys making these decision are paid so much.

Yep, Watkins would be solid for two years if we go nuts with the LW position.

Bring Back Kerrea Gilbert Yeah. Of all the strikers we have been linked to, Watkins is the one I most trust to come in and deliver this season. The other thing about him is he is a well-rested fekker. He hasn't hand millions of hours of internationals and champions league like other guys of his age, e.g., Sterling. Even this year, he shared time with Duran. So I suspect he could have a few more years of top level football in him.
