This is exactly why the whole idea of "We cannot possibly accept any deal for Thomas Partey for less than £50m" was kinda silly. Being great whenever you show up doesn't count for a whole lot when you're 30 years old and are already a part-time player.

JazzG yep. he's lost his burst. he could probably do a job as a sitting midfielder, but he would've lost a big part of what made him unique. this window was too soon to get rid of him, as losing both him and xhaka would've been too much. it does feel like we should begin phasing him out now. getting rice in was huge in that sense

This'll be my one and only "I told you so" on this question.

We should've sold Partey for football reasons. Been saying as much for months, he's begun his physical decline, and I predicted this muscle injury, and made the argument partly based on it. Last season's injury free run was an outlier. This has been seen a mile off.

maybe, but I still think it would've been a very aggressive move to sell both him and xhaka in one window. my opinion is coloured by the fact i didn't think rice was the right fit to replace his role as a 6. I think if the right offer arrived the club would've seriously considered selling though

During preseason Arteta's seemingly made the decision to retain the player for the reasons you point out, but if so that decision was a bit in denial about these downside risks.

Maybe—again, from a football perspective—Partey will contribute later in the season. And at least it should settle some of the problems with the selection, unless it leads to something even more contorted.

We had to spend the last few days of the window thinning down the team just so we wouldn’t have players who would be unregistered for the season - we once had that problem with Ozil and Sokratis unregistered, if you remember. That was the time we had the most moans coming from the camp.

We have the following midfielders for 3-4 positions depending on formation: Jorginho, Rice, Odegaard, Smith-Rowe, Vieira, Havertz, Trossard, and then Elneny and Partey. But yeah, fuck the leadership.

Agreed. At times we act so amateurish. Always one step forward two steps back in the transfer market. We once haven’t had a transfer window where you can hand on heart say ‘yep, that was a good one and no gaps, let’s go’.

We have 3 DMs ahead of him who can play that 6 role better. What’s the alternative? Get Patino and then destroy his career by not playing him?

Claudius Arteta will give Elneny exactly 0 minutes in the PL, 0 in the CL, close to 0 in the FA Cup, and a few minutes in the league cup(if we don't get decent opponents, if we get City like last year for example, it will be 0 as well). Yeah, any academy player could do that without having to pay him the 65.000 pounds per week he is reportedly on.
