I’m fine losing this. A large part of this Mudryk story is simply the investment we as a club and fan base have made into the transfer versus certainty of his ability. This is a guy who is more at the Vieira stage of development than say Leao or Kvaratskhelia. The same way Vieira has extreme passing ability, he has extreme speed etc., but both are unproven at the highest level. So it is plausible that Mudryk could have a Vieira-like trajectory, which might not even be enough right now, but could be awesome next season. Sobriety

The politics won't be mentioned much, but there is the overpowering atmosphere of national defence in Ukraine, and the symbolism of this €100m fee as a literal "war chest" to rescue Ukraine's strongest football club and the sports jewel of its most disputed territory.

For example Shakhtar ultras have been posing for influencer pics with Ukrainian forces on the eastern front of the Russian war for a year or so.

There could be nasty pitfalls for Mudryk here. No doubt some Shakhtar fans aren't too keen on him leaving, but going on strike or refusing to maximise now might result in an accusation he's anti-Ukraine, or a campaign of threats against him or his people.

James unclear on this myself. Some say they get to amortize it over those years (say 10 mill euros per year) but i thought the seller wanted a chunk upfront. Don’t know how books the are balanced.

Hey two different things. Cash impact and income statement impacts.

Cash impact. Even though the deal is 7 years, it is rumoured that Chelsea offered more of the guaranteed cash up front. So they could for example pay 50 now and then 10 in each of the next 2years. That’s cash flowing out of Chelsea to Shaktar. Maybe we offered 30,20,20.
Income statement. The player is capitalised as a £70m asset by Chelsea with a 7 year asset life on the balance sheet. Each year, they amortise 1/7th of that, which comes out as a £10m expense on the income statement each year. If he was on a 5 year contract, that expense would be £14m a year. So this is the part that gives them breathing room for FFP.

That said, I’m not sure that this is what will make the difference in meeting FFP when the owner has committed £400m in transfer fees in 6 months.

Also important to note cash is what gives financial doping clubs a big advantage. They don’t need to time costs with revenues. They can just give more cash up front even for the same FFP impact

Then Edu comes out recently and explains all that happened is that we enquired about him and they said he wants Barca and they will let us know it anything changes... Think it's worth bearing this in mind when people announce we're "wasting time and resources" on a series of bids. The bids themselves shouldn't be that much work. The tough parts are the market search, the tactful correspondence, managing information and the press, the due diligence, the prep, the contractual work etc. These all go on to one level or another for several targets all the time, you'd think.

James FFP has so many loopholes. Offering a long ass contract to lower costs per year needs to be looked at

Clrnc it’s not really a loophole, but a risky policy. Eventually down the line it will give them less room to spend. They’re basically gambling on getting these transfers right.
