With all the other examples, the selling club was easy to negotiate. Shakthar won't budge, and Mudryk knows that fact very well too seeing how many bids they rejected since the summer.

Clrnc it’s just a negotiating tactic. Why do you think Chelsea suddenly got it done in hours? Because we were basically there and ready to accept, it was all or nothing time. The fact that they are war torn and have lost all their players is exactly why they could have never afforded to walk away from our offer when push came to shove.

In fact I reckon if we dragged it out until 31st and didn’t give them the indication that we wanted this done asap we’d have probably been able to get him cheaper than what we offered.

As for Mudryk, maybe he’s not as much of a dickhead as Cesc to go on strike and take away Shaktars bargaining power etc. Or maybe Edu is too nice compared to the Barca execs when it comes to using players to manipulate these situations. But the fact remains if he was desperate to only come here and nowhere else it would have happened. I suspect he just found Chelsea’s offer attractive enough that it wasn’t that deep.

Clrnc that’s point though, Shakhtar got lucky that Chelsea have a new owner willing to splash the cash at this point in time. If no one else was interested do you think they would have rejected 95m euros from us if it was the only offer on the table?

If he really wanted to come here he could have knocked back Chelsea and eventually Shakhtar would have folded. Asking about us, and finding out we wouldn’t match Chelsea’s bid isn’t him being left without an option, it’s only removing an option for him. He didn’t have to sign for Chelsea, he could have stayed. That he chose to go there tells me enough about him to know missing out doesn’t bother me.

It’s already a ridiculous fee for a player unproven at the top level, no point getting into a pointless cash war with Chelsea over him. If we matched they’d have went higher. Missing out on him won’t be the issue, responding to this and delivering someone else is the key issue for Arteta and Edu now. We’ve plenty gaps to fill and money to do it.

Been wondering about the 7 year deals theyve been handing out. Is this a way for them to amortise the money involved and avoid potential FFP?

Finally chelsea appear to have a much more compelling deal structure than us. It’s not just the amounts but the timing of guaranteed payments and likelihood of variable payments.

They had an appeal rejected this week with CAS, looking for compensation over players who had suspended their contracts. Probably meant a further void in finances.

goon I think that line of thinking is very unfair to the player given that he did everything he could barring an illegal strike or falling out with his beloved club that brought him through.

Clrnc I can definitely see the reasoning behind us drawing a line and we probably already went further than what we envisioned initially, but blaming Mudryk himself seems weird to me too. By all accounts we were his first choice, but he isn't a complete cunt to the club that brought him through so when they got one bid that's better than the other, he didn't kick up a fuzz.

People have preached about the long-term here for years now, yet when Mudryk goes to Chelsea he's spoken about as if he's going to China and basically throwing away his career because they're a mess currently. They're getting Nkunku in the summer and are in the middle of an injury crisis, it's not like the future is looking bleak.

After their last game they have Broja, Felix, Pulisic, Sterling, RLC, Kante, Zakaria, Chilwell, Fofana, James and Mendy injured or suspended.

Clrnc where did I blame him? I even said maybe he’s a nice guy and took his current club into his consideration. All I said was if he really wanted to come here he could have. He wouldn’t have needed to go on strike, he just would have had to say no to Chelsea. It would have been done 100%

The politics won't be mentioned much, but there is the overpowering atmosphere of national defence in Ukraine, and the symbolism of this €100m fee as a literal "war chest" to rescue Ukraine's strongest football club and the sports jewel of its most disputed territory.

For example Shakhtar ultras have been posing for influencer pics with Ukrainian forces on the eastern front of the Russian war for a year or so.

There could be nasty pitfalls for Mudryk here. No doubt some Shakhtar fans aren't too keen on him leaving, but going on strike or refusing to maximise now might result in an accusation he's anti-Ukraine, or a campaign of threats against him or his people.

I’m fine losing this. A large part of this Mudryk story is simply the investment we as a club and fan base have made into the transfer versus certainty of his ability. This is a guy who is more at the Vieira stage of development than say Leao or Kvaratskhelia. The same way Vieira has extreme passing ability, he has extreme speed etc., but both are unproven at the highest level. So it is plausible that Mudryk could have a Vieira-like trajectory, which might not even be enough right now, but could be awesome next season. Sobriety

Hey two different things. Cash impact and income statement impacts.

Cash impact. Even though the deal is 7 years, it is rumoured that Chelsea offered more of the guaranteed cash up front. So they could for example pay 50 now and then 10 in each of the next 2years. That’s cash flowing out of Chelsea to Shaktar. Maybe we offered 30,20,20.
Income statement. The player is capitalised as a £70m asset by Chelsea with a 7 year asset life on the balance sheet. Each year, they amortise 1/7th of that, which comes out as a £10m expense on the income statement each year. If he was on a 5 year contract, that expense would be £14m a year. So this is the part that gives them breathing room for FFP.

That said, I’m not sure that this is what will make the difference in meeting FFP when the owner has committed £400m in transfer fees in 6 months.

Also important to note cash is what gives financial doping clubs a big advantage. They don’t need to time costs with revenues. They can just give more cash up front even for the same FFP impact

It's very easy for you to assume it will be done 100%, it's not that clear cut, not with Edu and Co there

Coombs he agreed wages with us but yeah we don't know what we offered in the 25m add ons compared to their 30m add ons in terms of reachability.
