Expectations for the upcoming season.

Thing about this season is that Spurs, Chelsea and United all had major woes last year. Spurs are much less wobbly now, and Chelsea and United will probably be a little bit less wobbly.

It'll be a hectic season and I think the head to heads are going to matter even more than last year.

I don't know about "7 out of 8" etc but it'll be worth giving it all at Old Trafford in a week, and most points we earn in October will be worth two points.

We've got nothing in particular to fear but the league is an absolute arms race this season.

Martinelli is 21 and already looks like he's taken a step up this season. Saka scored 11 last season and is just 20, and he's been carrying us for 2 seasons.

Odegaards creativity needs to go up but he's young too and playing with Jesus and Eddie rather than Lacazette who was behind him half the time should help.

This is more likely to happen through continued internal improvement of our young players than by replacing them.

Yep, clubs with 2 days to sort their shit out. Maybe after Christmas they find some form but I think they'll struggle this season. Both clubs in transition. We need to put distance between us and them before they find any sort of rhythm.

@Jimmy Dismissing United as competition for top 4 altogether already seems very arrogant.

I'd just predict a return to the mean for United. They're not going to be as limp as they were with Rangnick in charge basically not even knowing how to manage a match day. Would be great to beat them at OT while they're still finding their feet.

Maybe they'll be better, maybe they'll even be really good. Things can change fast. But the fact that they've bought a bunch of highly rated and expensive players doesn't automatically mean they're going to be significantly better.

Really? I think there will be a top 5 competing for the CL and then United, Newcastle and maybe someone else like Palace, Brighton, WHU, etc competing for the Europa/confrence spots.

Dropped this place like i was MDGooner after Arteta’s extension so didn’t get the chance to enjoy myself on here as much as last season. So dropped the ball on that one.

Obviously can’t vouch for the last one because of that but i’ll give you guys, and myself, the benefit of the doubt and assume i got that one right, too.

Pretty accurate with the rest, though.

So I wasn’t around when this thread was made. But one thing I find fascinating is the discordance between this thread and Frye end of season ratings thread. This thread is generally, “we should aim for top 4, the manager is shit”.. and then the team mounts a title challenge and our best points haul in two decades. Go to the season review and the takes are “ah, well, they did well but not good enough!” The priors are completely out of sync with the incoming opinions. .

Claudius That's not so surprising is it? We crashed out of the top four race last term. Arteta himself constantly tells us we are ahead of schedule, so I guess even he had lower expectations of his squad this season. Then we fly into a blazing hot start (50 point half season) and top the league 70% of its duration, and then crash and burn at the business end of the season again.

Claudius Expectations are (rightly) quick to rise and slow to fall. After an astounding and unexpected first half of the season it's only natural the expectations and demands placed on the team and manager are different to those before the season kicks off.

It's only natural that you are judged against the level you have shown you can reach, not that of which you have shown previously.

I think the fatigue is with the "almost" nature of everything we have done as a club in the last 10 years - calendar year points "trophies", "put the pressure on" this year, etc. I, for instance, still don't know where I stand in terms of whether we had a great year or if we just got lucky with Liverpool being rubbish, MU in their first year under a new manager, NU not yet flexing their muscles fully, Chelsea being a complete clown car. This alignment of the stars won't happen every year and we blew it when it did.

banduan That's one of three things I wanna see us do under Arteta do this season that we do well before:
Get more points from losing positions - especially if the other team scores first.
Change tack in better ways when the opponent has us figured out on the day.
Rotate better throughout the season

There's a fourth which is to make subs earlier to influence games but I've kinda given up on that and I know he'd at least sub players out who've lost their heads (Nuno).

holy crap we did barely any of the above. Maybe #1 - getting more points from losing positions but we barely get into that position and still tend to lose when we do.

banduan that's not true actually.. it would have changed with the games we lost during the run in, but earlier in the season we were either top, or second for picking up points from losing positions.

Qwiss personally would’ve voted exactly like Dula. Last season suggested we would be 3rd best (after City and Pool). I think we benefited from Pool falling flat on their faces , taking us up to 2nd. But 3rd was a good bet for this team.

Once we were in 1st I only felt we would stay there as long as the best players stayed healthy. They didn’t. C’est la vie.

Qwiss lol. No need for kudos.

I’ll wait for the end of the summer. But if we get Ricedo, I’m willing to put us as favorites next season regardless of what other teams do. That combination would allow us to overcome both Partey and Saliba/Tomi injury woes. I’m very comfortable with philosophy and trajectory and have been for a while tbh. 🙂
