This feels like a rather whimsical take to me. I think on his day, he's exactly the kind of player we need (inconsistent finishing aside). He can create openings for others and can take players on, thereby giving us an additional outlet when Control all isn't working.
Obviously, there's a big caveat to all this about whether he can recapture his initial form and stay fit for an extended period of time but he definitely has a use.
