Nah, the feeling that you can't lose the ball is definitely something drilled into them. Jesus has already talked about how he feels like he can be himself again here and Grealish has also talked about it.

People are getting a little extreme here. Players are positionally rigid in Guardiola's systems, especially strikers, but flair and creative expression is always on show. The fact that there is a demand to be efficient doesn't change that. But comparitively, he no doubt enjoys more freedom here.

There is also the comment made back in Brazil by someone in the game that he was joining "a small, small club", and they thought his position in the WC team should go to Gabigol as he was scoring more goals.

IIRC Guardiola follws the Cruyff model whereby the players are given freedom to express themselves in the final 3rd, but not before hand. There was the story from TH when he broke the tactic and scored, but was then subbed out by Guardiola at half time.

Speaking for myself I didn't see the look of a stone cold killer from him, but I think it is perhaps more the smile on his face when he is enjoying playing.
There was also some criticism of him scoring below his xG most seasons, but IIRC his goals per minutes played has him amongst the best goal scorers in the EPL.

He's getting to many chances but his biggest weakness will probably be that he's going to miss sitters more regularly than we'd like. Even this season he's slightly below his xG (though the sample size is way too small so far, if he'd scored one more he'd be well over his xG).

Jesus could move how he's moving, not score another goal all season and still be a massive upgrade, that's the beauty of the signing really. We were bound to love him.

I don't mind about +/- xG so long as they keep getting into good positions and taking shots = quantity of shots v quality of shots. Not hitting xG becomes more of an issue when the player stops taking shots.

You definitely want your players at least hitting or getting very close to xG.

To be fair to Jesus though only one of his misses seemed bad to me and even that was a little awkward. The rest were a combination of good saves and tackles in time pressured situations.

Strikers hitting above or below xG is overrated. Chances typically have around a 20% chance of going in. So it doesn't really matter if you are hitting those 20% chances at 16% or 24%. Volume is much more important. If you are taking one shot like Laca because you are never in the box, then you will almost always finish a game with no goals. If you're Salah taking 4 shots per game, then you will score in most games. It's that simple

And that's where we see the difference in Arsenal now that the team is complete. The front five are flooding the box more (we get most bodies in the box per cross in the league this season), and the forwards are spending more time closer to the box to get more shots off.

Agreed!

Henry used to take tons of shots and it's partly why he scored so many. Same with C. Ronaldo. They both created so many opportunities for themselves to hit the back of the net.

Currently for us Jesus has 2 goals and an xg of 2.17. So I wont get too worried yet about him underperforming his xg. He was obviously a bit lacking in confidence at City because not only was he under xg but he didn't score much overall last season either. Looks a different player this season. Have to credit Arteta with giving him more freedom, it looks exactly what he needed.

hopefully the team will learn how to tee him up with quality chances. i think he'll also surprise people with how prolific he can be with decent service

marti really could be anything. there's phases in games where he is just unplayable. you can sense the relentless will to improve in him as well

I think as well as service he needs support in the box to help give him more space.

He actually played quite deep against United. We could’ve pushed him farther up.

And screw the refs for giving Varane and that midget defender to rough him up without consequence

Didn't let it affect him though, gave them trouble all game long with his movement and the way he held up play.

He probably won't be a 30+ goal scorer but I think his overall play and contribution will make us a lot better. We are going to need Saka & Martinelli to step up their games this season and I think they will.
