We switched to 4-3-3 much later in the season and even then didn't particularly stick to it.

I don't get dissing the 4-2-3-1 though it's a solid formation. If it's about Xhaka, him featuring in the 4-3-3 doesn't much change things.

The problem we had with the 433 was Partey's injury, and it took us too long to find someone able to cover the lone #6 role or even the right balance in a twin pivot before we settled with Elneny.

For mind the crucial difference between Xhaka in the 433 v 4231 is in the former in general he has defensive cover behind him in both the DM and FB when he is used as a #8, whereas in the latter he is generally the player looking to provide defensive cover when the FB goes forward to provide the 5th channel in attack.
In reality I don't like him in either role.

Which turn around of results? He played there when we had some good results but also for the results that basically ruined our season. The 433 is a better formation for us but without Partey the whole thing falls flat on its face.

Without Partey whatever formation we play just don't work well.

But judging from results last year, most of the time when we play 433 we get pinned back and not get the results we want. When the average positions was 4231 with a double pivot we have control of midfield easier.

The only player close to world class status in our squad is Saka, the rest let’s see.

definitely the first striker we've had since rvp that can create his own shot. you can already see in these first couple of outings, the difference it makes when your 9 has that extra touch of individual ability. doesn't have to be garrincha on the dribble, just need to have a few feints/turns in his locker. combine it with a turn of pace and quick release shooting, and you have a very productive striker there

Auba got 92 goals with us in four years, the absolute disrespect to claim he couldn't create his own shot. If Jesus gets to 92 goals in six years he'll have done well

I love auba, but creating his own shot wasn't naturally part of game. to be clear I mean creating his own space while in possession of the ball. aside from that Chelsea goal, his go to move was to shift it inside onto his right and finish with a curler. that was about the extent of it. jesus is a bit more dynamic with how he creates space for himself in posession imo. and he's nowhere near the finisher auba is, I wouldn't try to claim that

I don't even think Auba's finishing was extraordinary, except for in the last of his good seasons. The reason he scored much more than Jesus is because of his movement. Sure, when you add "while in possession of the ball" I'll agree that Jesus is better, but Auba's movement without the ball is also a way of creating shots.

Its pre-season. I didn't see Jesus create a lot for himself at City, he certainly couldn't turn nothing situations into goals the way Auba did for us. If he can add more to his game here great but I think people are getting way ahead of themselves and are going to be disappointed if Jesus maintains the sort of level he's had to date. If he can take the step up and reach Auba, RVP, etc level then brilliant but I'd honestly be satisfied if he hit Giroud numbers this season.

my feeling is it's actually always been in his locker but he hasn't really showcased it, for a few reasons. he has more scope here to show what he can do, he's the right age, and I think he will surprise a few people if he steps up the way I think he will.

He scored plenty of goals at City where he was the main creator of it. His goals per minute ratio is impressive too.

Was watching 2008/2009 season review yesterday for some reason, and remembered Arshavin's awesome shooting and how he needed fuck all backlift to get shots off.

Jesus is somewhat similar in that respect. It's a massive weapon for us to have.

Arguably best centre forward in 19/20 and top 5 for most of his tenure (half of which was out wide). Scorched all sorts of club records. Definitely needs more respect but more than that I'd hope an appreciation of his craft

I get what they meant by saying Jesus can create something out of nothing though. It's only pre season but his strength and dribbling ability in the box coupled with his own inventiveness does surprises me.

Auba can do it but not to that extent. His close control and strength is somewhat lacking in the box. He is more of a finisher and superb timing

Auba was awesome until he wasn't. Jesus has it all ahead of him, and so far it looks very exciting.

Bets on when he'll get his first hattrick? Before the WC is my guess.
