Claudius what exactly would we have lost this season if we didn't have Nelson? I don't see anything tangible he's given us. He played 100 league minutes and a few cup games, we are out of both cups, I don't see a downside to replacing him with youth. The reality is Nelson can't "come right in and contribute". Maybe he could contribute with more minutes but with the scraps he's getting now he's not contributing. His goal last season was great but it didn't act as a catalyst for anything and its not a reason to keep him and have him rotting on the bench.

A bad / young player means more work for the remaining players when he’s slotted in.

Players like Nelson who Arteta doesn't trust means more work for the rest of the squad because Mikel wont use them. We need someone who can give Martinelli and Saka a rest every now and then.

Qwiss Nelson is a really good player. So you know you have a solid performance level when your starters are out. I never expect miracles when he comes on but I also never expect a disaster. Just a stable 5-7 out of 10 player. Which is what you need when you’re resting the players who you need to give you 8 and 9 out 10 performances. In an ideal world, we have another player who gives us a 9/10 more regularly but for that I would target Eddie who just makes us worse whenever he comes on.

As for playing kids, who are all these forwards we aren’t playing? And please don’t mention Nwaneri. He’s 16. He’s a child. He’s 2 years away from being a useful squad member at this level. We are probably only keeping him because he is too young to loan out to a championship side that will in any case just bench him anyway.

Claudius I don't see how you can class Nelson as a really good player. He does not affect the game and from the minutes he has been given he really hasn't done much in my opinion. You need tactical depth on your bench to change things when it hasn't gone as you wanted. Miracles are one thing but I do not think when he has come on we are more likely to get a goal or change a result. We've also given him a big wage so it's a drag on some of our resources in line with other recruitment poor decisions last year

We need players who are good enough to start some of our matches and have the capability to change things from the bench if that's where there are and I don't think Nelson is either of those.

Eddies way better than Nelson. Thats why he plays more. He actually contributes with goals, assists, penalties won, etc

I think the bigger issue for Nelson (and Eddie) is less about his actual ability and more to do with the fact it feels pointless him being in the squad if Arteta doesn't play him.

I have no issue with him being here as a stop-gap but if we went to the effort of renewing his contract on inflated wages, why isn't he getting more minutes?

awooga83 how can he affect games in the minutes he has been given. Thats harsh on him man, the guy has played 100 PL minutes this year. The most minutes he got was 26, he has had like 4 games where he got literally 1 minute. This season he averages 11 minutes per PL appearance. Then you add the fact that he comes on in 2 situations, we are down 1-2 goals and the opponent is defending with 11 men in the box or he is used to waste time. Go on son, affect the game. I don't know many players in the world that can play 11 minutes once every 3 weeks and affect games on a regular basis.
Nelson last started a PL game for Arsenal in 2020, and only because we had injuries, he even scored that game but was benched again the very next one.

Vs Liverpool in the cup he was by far our best attacking player on the left(and funny enough the first one to be subbed off).

HomeSteak in all the time I've seen him play I've not seen performances that show he can deliver at the level we need. The Liverpool game he missed the early big chance and that was poor quality and decision making in my view that's less about whether your playing it's just inherently there.

If your saying about the time he's getting well he is not going to get that because essentially what we are saying is play him more so we can see what he can do but that's too risky if you have no assessment on him now may as well sell him and bring in a player we've actually seen somewhere else be able to impact matches consistently rather then keep him around.

awooga83 that's very harsh on Nelson. He's barely been given a chance and our first choice Martinelli has been playing worse than him

Clrnc good use of resources? Sell both Nketiah and Nelson and get an elite forward. I agree with you there. As a team we would be better off with someone who can come in and compete with or better Jesus/Martinelli. Then you have someone who would have 1000 minutes.

Clrnc it's not about him it's about improving the squad. If Nelson needs time to be assessed then he should have gone on loan if that wasn't going to happen then we should have sold him because right now nothing I've seen says he had the quality. Maybe in a different circumstance he would get time but he won't here we need to pushing for challenging now so we can't afford to figure out if he's good enough. It may be harsh but that's life at the elite level you have to be ruthless you don't get points for thinking of personal circumstances like that

Claudius Yep. Just sell whoever that Arteta don't trust. No point leaving them on the bench with pathetic end of game minutes whenever we are losing and expect them to work miracles, while overworking the first team players because theres no one he can trust on the bench to come on (other than Trossard generally).

Clrnc I agree with your thinking. I do think part of the issue is we have done a ton of remodeling every summer, so there is perhaps only so much work that Arteta/Edu can do. And to their credit they have extended Nelson/Nketiah, so we can still cash in.

Not looked but feels like Nelson’s end product per 90 is actually pretty good.

I agree with Claud, Nelson is a better fit for this team. Eddie is probably a role model on the training pitch and will make a good striker for a mid table side but he’s a bad fit for this team.

Agree that Eddie will end up a midtable team but I don't think Reiss will be a started at a mid table side. Either a squad player in mistake or a championship/relegation level side.

Qwiss I actually think a lot of coaches would like Nelson. He’s a technically astute player. Very coachable. You know what you are getting when you send him out. He’s better than most bottom half wingers. I just think the gap between a top 4 winger and a position 10 winger is as big as the ass on J Lo.

Maybe, he’s one of those that needs the right team, manager, environment. In terms of technical ability he’s as good and clean as anyone in the team.

Claudius Supposedly West Ham have been tracking him very closely, though after the Liverpool match Nelson himself came out to loudly declare he's still fighting for a role at Arsenal.

I reckon he'd be on the chopping block myself, and given it's for the best if the the players you are those you can conceivably get a fee for, I can see the logic. I would happily move Nketiah and Nelson on this summer, and I assume they and Smith Rowe are the "home grown" contingent to which the rumours refer. In Smith Rowe's case I bloody well hope we get to see more than five minutes here or there before we let him creep away for nothing.
