jesus purportedly wants to prove himself as a starting number 9, and is 3 years younger, so i think there's still a bit more for him to prove. Sterling on the hand, does fall into the category of someone whose resume is already pretty solidified and may coast if he joined our club

Viewing Arsenal as a step down doesn't necessarily mean the player isn't hungry. Pretty sure Ødegaard realizes that Arsenal aren't quite Real Madrid level. Same with Sanchez when he came here, or Partey.

If we was 30 you could maybe think that, but he still has a lot to prove. Not a fan of most of the players we been linked to but Jesus could be a really smart move

Odegaard hadn't been given a chance at Real though. The situations there are almost the polar opposite.

Jesus isn't leaving City because he's fed up of the role he's had. He's leaving because with Halaand coming in and he knows he wont get minutes any more. The fact he couldn't nail down the CF role in a team with no other CFs should tell you everything you need to know.

Fair enough but then again it wouldn't be the first time that a top club discarded a player surplus to requirements or considered not good enough could thrive elsewhere, e.g. Barcelona ditched Alexis and he was one of our best players in the Emirates era. Your argument holds true for Sterling not so much for Jesus.

I don't really want Jesus either by the way, but not because City are selling him or that he couldn't cement his position there but because he never fully convinced me even at his best. We could do worse but also a lot better.

Well yeah my main thing is I've rarely been impressed watching him but I think that goes hand in hand with him not being able to nail down his place. He's just not good enough to do either.

It's damning for sure. I feel like we should either go for players who are clearly a tier above or just keep backing our own lads like Eddie, Smith-Rowe, Maitland-Niles, etc. Transfers are absolutely needed to improve the overall quality of the team, but these sideways moves gotta stop. They cost a lot of time and money and they rarely pan out in the end. If your scouts think they have found a new Tomiyasu then by all means go for it, but I don't trust these transfers like Jesus, Willian, Luiz, Sterling, et cetera where we buy someone based on their status and not their current ability. They feel like they aren't being negotiated in good faith.

There's a small chance Jesus might prove me wrong here because he's much yonger than the other ones I mentioned, but I really don't think so. I think he's going to be another Lacazette or Welbeck. We should stop doing Chelsea and City favours by taking these players off their hands. They turn into level caps for Arsenal after a while.

Totally agree Klaus. I don't think Jesus up front next season scores much more than Eddie. And I have a feeling even when he does score he'll be less of a difference maker. I think he'd probably drop deep more and link better but is that really a good thing? We do that well on our good days anyway, I'd rather have Eddie picking defenders pockets when we aren't playing well. It makes us a more rounded team.

My real fear though is that we'll sign Jesus and keep Eddie and thats it. Neither should be our main striker next season, we need someone a level above. Whoever comes in is supposed to be the Auba replacement, not the Laca replacement.

i want someone a level above too, but every big name in the market has major question marks over them, and were talking players in the 60m+ bracket. I've been critical of our recruitment but I don't blame the club for looking at something that represents a low risk value option.

I don't want him either, but in terms of being hungry/seeing Arsenal as a step down I don't really see the difference between Ødegaard coming here because he doesn't get in ahead of better players and Jesus coming here after failing to nail down a spot at City.

I have learned not to turn our noses down on very good players like Sterling and Jesus, otherwise we will get no winger and a super overpriced Abraham

Odegaard came to us at 22 and has won one Spanish cup in his career. Jesus has multiple league medals, cup medals and has played in CL final. To me those are different situations.

I suspect other factors that makes all 3 of Jesus, Sterling and Tielemens attractive is both their being EPL proven AND their experience, particularly if we sell Xhaka.
Lastly I also think they fit the profile of being ready to deliver this season as opposed to being more development players.

C'mon man. In Ødegaard's case the issue was that Madrid thought he was Arsenal level. I'm talking about the type of player who's been instrumental winning major trophies but is surplus at a major club. With the squad and the attitude we presently have, I'd rather we signed engines than passengers.

Just saying in terms of being hungry it doesn't make sense to me. He could sit on City's bench and collect another PL medal next season.

Let’s be honest if there’s an attribute that Arteta values it’s hunger and given he knows Jesus personally it’s safe to say that’s probably not an issue. It doesn’t really come across that way on the pitch either. What Jesus needs to get to the next level is to be in the right place at the right time and so I can see why Arsenal would appeal to him. Just not sure he’s the right striker at the right time for us.

That's a weird thing to say because I won't be sure about that. He has played plenty of players with clearly no hunger.
