He's absolutely awful at the moment. Nervy as shit due to who his partner is.

However he also really looks exposed as when he's wide on the touch line and has to get the ball up the pitch. It usually goes out for a throw. Compare that to the way Walker and Stones played the ball in similar circumstances.

I think Gabriel is a relatively poor defender, he always has some poor decisions on a match and has cost us quite a few moments throughout the season. Obviously when Saliva is there that have a decent partnership but I'm not sure he's that good of defender just okay in my book but I think it's somewhere we could improve in time where we've sorted some other positions first.

awooga83 that's a bit harsh to say he's "poor" given he's babysitting Rob Holding and a left back who's really a central midfielder at the moment.

RocktheCasbah I was actually wondering whether it might solidify us a bit to bring KT back in and give Gabriel some help. I know KT can't do what Zinchenko does, but it's not like his left foot is a club foot either.

RocktheCasbah pretty much. gab and willy have been largely phenomenal this season. their athleticism and speed was one the main reasons we were able to execute our suffocating style of play, and push our players so high up the pitch. playing the way we do with both zinny and holding in the lineup gives gabriel too much water to carry defensively.

in saying that, I didn't really like the way he defended KDB for the opener. it was in his power to close that down way better

Think he's been one of the few who's looked anyway close to decent in recent weeks and with probably the hardest job in team, I think people fail to appreciate he's usually playing centre back and left back when the opposition has the ball in transition. Add in Salibas injury and what appears to be Partey playing while unfit and its a near impossible job.

This is it, he's expected to cover a paddock and any time we concede through that area, literally a fifth of the whole pitch by area, people are like "and where was Gabriel?" It's similar to how Kos used to get hung out to dry. He's been exposed on his left more often in recent weeks which is probably because he's had to look to his right more.

In general I think too many players have been reevaluated in a kneejerk manner after the last few games.

He's not even close to being awful BBKG. Dont know what you are watching. I mean sure if you take it without context his performance against Citeh, but he was mostly left 2v1, 3v1 against their attackers running directly at him. The world best out and out striker and probably the world most productive playmaker

Clrnc he's also been having to deal with a lot of high turnovers where we give the ball away deep and he's having to react in an unexpected position. The penalty vs West Ham and the Theo goal both coming in that scenario.

I did say earlier on in the season during Europa games that both he and Saliba look noticeably better when playing with each other though.

RocktheCasbah Zinchenko is currently giving us very little in terms of positives over Tierney.

I would be very disappointed if we sold Tierney, or that we don't give him anymore starts for the rest of the season. He's the better choice now, play him as a proper LB

Maybe I didn't articulate it well but he makes a lot of rash decisions. Many of the penalties he's given away are from diving in and that's not because of holding its just put decision making. He's fine in general but I think he is slight weak spot andI'm never fully confident with him. Don't get me wrong he's not catastrophic but I think he gets caught with poor decision making a bit too often.

awooga83 He literally pulled out of the challenge vs Paqueta but that guy ran into him and dived.

Even if he didn't pull out for example, I would rather take the chance of a penalty then give Paqueta a free shot at goal that near (higher chance of a goal)

the problem with carrying someone like zinny (and i can see why city sold him) is that if he isn't performing excellent in this specialized role he's of no use because he can't defend. if tierney isn't helping our attack in a game at least he can defend so there is still some value there.

Meatwad We also don't need another CM overload most of the time, but rather we need an overlapping fullback for cutbacks

Zinny is great in the right circumstances but we need to rotate him when needed. If you are playing a team with a strong right winger for instance.

Qwiss aye. I really think we ought to have the option of inverting the RB occasionally if we need mote solidity at LB.

It's just because Zinchenko isn't at left back often, when Gab is pulled out there and under pressure, I wish we had someone with a defter pass on him.

Put it this way, if Gabriel had a White like defender on his side and Saliba has someone like Zinchenco at RB a lot of people would be saying it's proof that Arteta was right and that Saliba isn't ready for thus level and should still be out on loan.

The job covering all the space that Zinchenko leaves behind is a mammoth task. Especially when as a defence we have a substitute CB who isn't quick enough to cover for Gabriel when he has to shift over to the other side to cover for Zinchenko.

Gabriel is one of the best defenders in the league, there's hardly anyone I'd swap him for playing for our rivals. We're lucky we have both him and Saliba.
