As far as I'm concerned, the Gulf countries are one of the worst abusers of human rights on the planet despite having the highest level of wealth per capita. Hypocrisy is a small price to pay to call them out
Yeah but it's not even hypocrisy, they're not actually calling them out is the problem. If say you criticised and sanctioned Qatar for its flagrant human rights violations while ignoring those of your own country, the US, Israel etc. that would be hypocritical.
What's happening here is not even that, some softspoken quibbling comment about how they should do better, while at the same time sending not only the German NT there but also strengthening business relations over pretty much every sector over the last decade. And worse still and very reminiscent of the Erdogan-Özil saga those who are criticising Qatar are doing it very often with ulterior motives.
I'd agree ignoring all that would be worth it if it did save some lives but I'm pretty sure it hasn't. I've family in the region and I know how people who aren't from GCC are treated there. They basically don't give a fuck about any limp criticism coming their way because why should they when they know there won't be any consequences? As long as the US military base stays there they know they've nothing to fear.
