I’ll watch. But it won’t be like good old days as a kid when I watched 64 days. Willl probably see all QF and be selective of others.
My overall thoughts on this Qatar award
I had a very reflexive reaction to UK publications going off about Qatar as a host city. They complain about every developing country host of a a World Cup or an Olympics. The non white part of the World should only ever be invited to these events, not host is the message that has been clearly communicated for 20+ years. Whether it’s Qatar, Brazil, India, South Africa etc hosting a major sporting event. it’s just openly racist and exhausting.
That said, Qatar itself is a bizarre decision. There is no need to specifically select Middle East, it’s not a confederation. Why not South Asia or South East Asia. Only calling here was money. And it’s come at the expense of great expense (I know fans who cannot travel now because hotels are €2k), limited fan freedoms (unmarried, LGBT, alcohol). It’s almost as though the people making the decision have never been to a World Cup. Hugged strangers. Drank all day. Made travel arrangements on the fly. Just rolled with it and had fun. This is the Google exec’s World Cup.
