Their attacking style of play, even against bigger European clubs, doesn't seem to hinder them either.

Most importantly like every other example you can find, their new manager impose his style really quickly in a few matches and didn't need 3-4 windows of "own" players and 3 years or more longterm plan to be successful in their circumstances.

Still seems insane to throw Emery away in favor of Arteta.

I thought Emery deserved to be sacked for the run he was on, the problem I have is that Arteta has had similar runs with nothing but backing. Imagine we'd supported Emery with signings the way we did with Arteta, he's almost certainly have gotten us back into the CL.

the hierarchy certainly never backed him as fully as arteta. as we came to find out afterwards, signings torreira and pepe weren't even his choices

I'm just glad we didn't wait too long to sack Emery. He was never the right man for the job. He's a good coach, although certainly not an elite one, he's not a squad builder or the guy you want for the long-term.

Whether Arteta is or not remains to be seen, but that's besides the point.

I obviously don’t think it remains to be seen and I don’t think it's besides the point. If we can't conclude yet whether Arteta is the man how can we conclude on Emery when he got fired before he got the backing that Arteta has?

I meant to the extent that he's still in the job and his team is still a work in progress. You could definitely argue Emery didn't get a chance to prove that one way or another. I had seen enough personally of Emery to know I didn't want him anywhere near the club or have anything to do with the rebuild that was so badly needed. With Arteta, I am still figuring that out.

Emery was sacked rightfully for the dreadful run of form at the end of his tenure here, Arteta wasn't. How can the fact "he's still in the job" be an argument then, if it were you would have had to say Emery shouldn't have been fired until the day before he got the sack.

I think the Maguire talk was just papers linking us wasn' it? The guys Emery himself confirmed for wanting to buy were Fabinho Nkunku and Zaha, the latter doesn't have the highest ceiling but would've been a solid choice if he had been available for a reasonable fee, the other two obviously would've been massive buys for us. Maguire would've tarnished all other decisions of course but I haven't seen anything concrete

Anyway Emery won a European trophy which we never got and got to the CL Ro16 with a team that has no business being there really. I'd put good money on Arteta never in his life coaching a team just in the group stages.

Brendan's teams disappoint once again in Europe.

Leicester knocked out from the group stage in EL as they lost to an injury ravaged Napoli and have to drop down to the conference league.

Napoli barely scraping through in 2nd behind Spartak is the bigger disappointment really compared to how they're doing in the league. Leicester are a bit shit but Napoli really should be favourites to win the whole thing.

One welcome change from this year is that the CL dropouts dont get a free ride into the round of 16.

They have to play a knockout round against one of the second placed team from the EL group stage.

This year's EL has some interesting teams in it. Looking forward to the knockout rounds, hoping to catch one of the big teams you've listed here in Frankfurt. If not would be good to glass Mark Noble from the stands at least

Going by domestic form to predict a Serie A team's performance in the EL sounds very questionable.

Atalantas domestic form is better than Napolis.
