QuincyAbeyie People were mostly unhappy with the lack of Buendia since Ødegaard had travelled back to Madrid at the time of the transfer, iirc.
This is it pretty much. I think people just didn't expect him to come once he left after his loan. People then started getting invested in the interest that was being show in Buendia, who by the way had a really good season and was available after Norwich went down.
In the end the anger was we were apparently interested in him and ended up pulling out/getting outbidded for (pick whichever) despite not knowing until late on whether he'd have been allowed to leave in the first place. Think Ceballos got a big injury around then as well so looked like there was no way they were letting him go until he forced the issue towards tue end of the window.
We were definitely right to go for Odegaard instead of Buendia/Maddison had they all been available. And the risk to wait for Odegaard certainly paid off. Could have backfired though not picking up either if he ended up staying at Madrid and signing a new contract after winning his place there. He's definitely good enough to have done so if they showed faith in him.
