"Clinical" is not a skill you can improve. It's the result of a variety of other skills combined with luck. And frankly, despite what it's supposed to mean, volume, which is what Øde needs - to pull the trigger a bit more often.

Cesc & Aaron Ramsey are two recent(ish) examples of players who used to get a lot of chances without taking them. Then, around 23-24 (hey!), something clicked for them - composure, probably - and, having become more clinical, they became 15-20 goal a season merchants.

But I do agree Ødegaard should shoot more.

I wonder if that chance he passed up against Palace has focused the mind a bit. I actually don't mind one bit that he's someone who'll look for that extra pass for a better shooting opportunity, he's a classic Wenger player in that sense. Just needs to make sure it's a decision to pass and not out of habit.

But I agree with you, I think once he gets a feel for it his ability to stay cool will see him score quite a few goals.

Ramsey? He had a stand out season in 13-14, but otherwise he was still very profligate in front of goal till he left. He just times his run very well and get into tons of good position, still lacks top technique and composure to finish which is why he mostly had single digit goal tally.

I don't think Odegaard should shoot more, that's just not his style and we have to appreciate that. He is very deliberate in his moves, sometimes too deliberate but all these comes from experience. I appreciate a player that can feint shooting and pass to a player in a better position.

Maybe but a test of a true leader is how they act in adversity imo. More often than not Ode doesn’t hide (appreciate you can look at Spurs and Newcastle away last season as an argument against this).

Solbakken says that he'll be surprised if Ødegaard doesn't play for Norway in this break. Unfortunately for Arsenal these are very important games for Norway so if there's a chance he can play they'll give it a shot.

Nations League aka a way to qualify for the Euros where norway haven't been for 24 years. He definitely shouldn't chill if he wants to keep his job.

For me this guy really stood out as the new conundrum over the last ninety (sorry, 107) minutes.

I really like his attributes and I don't believe he's shy of hard work. He also did two or three great things in the match as usual. But the long periods of time he was treading water or drowning, coupled with the increased dramatics … he felt like a weak link today. Also doesn't seem like we've got great alternatives.

I think making him captain was a mistake. He's a player I'd like rotated a bit more at his current level of development. He's still young and it'll be another year or two before he can dominate consistently.

Couldn’t agree more.

In a game where we played brilliantly, he was clearly our worst player today.

Why was he so passive in off ball situations?
Was that coaching/positioning from Arteta?
Or him lacking physical traits for games of this caliber?

He had a great pass for the first goal but was pretty tame throughout.

But not a problem for me, Vieira is on his heels

Yeah he's been my conundrum for a while. He showed a few great things today but 'drowning' (great way to describe it) is something he's doing too frequently in big games.

I hope Vieira is more of an involved type.

Vieira is a final ball merchant. Probably will be even less involved than Ode.

My point is people are saying despite the assist Ode's been invisible. Vieira will probably be the same when he's not finding end product.

One assist today wasn’t enough to offset his limited contribution elsewhere.

Had he scored his great chance, which he seems incapable of, I wouldn’t be in here moaning. He’d have a pass because he made the difference in moments that mattered.

He'll be fine, just going through a bit of a rough spell I think. Great pass for the first goal.
