Would definitely have paired him with Holding yesterday as he is very good at forming partnerships with whoever you put alongside him. Not the best defender we have, but he is pretty consistent. Also missed his leadership. In fact think we should have started Holding alongside Mari and taken our time in easing Ben White into the team. Leno is not in good form so better to keep familiar options in front of him rather start someone with whom he has had little time together in pre-season.

What's the plan against City and Chelsea if White struggles again (assuming he retains his place)?

He's faced forwards like that but last season he played in a back 3 with Bissouma ahead of him. He's being asked to do a lot more now.

That's actually true. I fear for our next two games. Lukaku is going to eat these boys alive. I can see Arteta move to a back 3.

Will never happen under Arteta, they are both right footed.

Watching White I can understand why Potter and also Bielsa needed to change formation to accommodate him. We have to go 3 at the back this season, it suits both him and Chambers. But without a good RWB we are dead too.

Or move White into midfield.

Still can’t believe we spent almost all of our entire transfer budget on a CB, when literally every other spot in the team was more in need of investment. Arteta and Edu are shocking.

A lot has been said about his aerial ability or lack thereof, but a bigger problem for me was that he looked completely lost. Positionally all over the place. Obviously it doesn't help to be surrounded by Chambers, Xhaka and Mari, but even so I expect a 50m player to do better.

haha "he'll get better." it just means "dear god please just let this be the first game jitters and don't let him be another dud."

anyway i prefer them starting off mediocre and building up over the season vs the mustafi, vermaelen and even gabriel last season where they start off like a house on fire and then slowly turn to shit. that's why i'm concerned about gabriel until i can see him this season.

I think he's a good player, but burning 50m of your resources is a 'push all your chips in' move for a club like us. it smacks of arrogance. if he was one of last 2-3 pieces missing in the jigsaw, yes blow 50m on white by all means. if you have your aerially dominant VVD ir vidic type defender in place already, yes blow 50m on white. we're not fitting pieces into a jigsaw though, we're scrambling to stop the jigsaw pieces from being chewed up by our pet chihuaha

Expectations were way too high for him. He shouldn't be blamed for being young and having faults in his game. He didn't make Arteta go out and spend £50m on him. People got all excited and claimed he was world class, and was going to revolutionise our defence and passing, etc Its always been the case that he's as flawed as any of our young defenders but he has potential. We need to judge him the way we were judging Gabriel last season rather than as a super signing that is ready to come in and improve us straight away.

stones was verging on being called a bust for a few years before he turned things around. difference city could comfortably absorb his development curve, doped up scum club that they are.
