We need to work as many angles in our favour as possible, because teams like United really screw us over when it comes money. You just know Saka and Saliba's agents will be holding up Sancho's 300k+ p/w salary as an example of what he could make elsewhere.

Its going to be interesting because we have significantly cut the wage bill recently. That should allow us more room to offer big deals to the likes of Saliba and Saka but it could also mean they don't want to offer players over a certain threshold too. We'll have to wait and see.

@[deleted]. Contract renewals are due as soon as you can tie a good player down if you have inclusive and definite plans for them. Wouldn’t you want Saka already tied down to a long term contract, say for another 5-6 years when he will be approaching his prime? Why shouldn’t the club want (or have wanted) to lock down Wilo asap as well if we actually truly believed he was the best defensive talent we have seen in decades?

Right, there's a complex calculation on both sides about certainty vs opportunity. If I was a young player like Saliba or Saka I'd absolutely be betting on myself by running my contract down. And sometimes a player will renew several years out in order to get an immediate raise. What I don't get is the notion that if Saliba had been here last year, that complexity would have become simplicity in favor of the club, he'd have already renewed, etc.

I do think that CL qualification this year will matter in the sense that it will affect contract renewal negotiations with our best young players.

I'm not saying I wish they'd be martyrs for the cause but it'd be nice if the "Hale End" factor played a part in moderating the raises. But that seems far more likely if we can get a sense of history from results on the pitch.

The Kroenkes have got deep pockets but our actual revenue is a different story—we can't afford Foden let alone Sancho money for all the youngsters.

One of the things you can say about the Kroenke's based on the NFL model is that they are willing to spend a lot of money when they see a chance to win. Aaron Donald makes 31M USD per year and he's not the highest paid player on the team.

TBF I think so far with Saka it has. And I think it will continue to as long as the club are fair about it. I think it'd be pretty unreasonable not to have him as a top 3 earner for instance.

Competing on the biggest stage, in the CL and challenging for the title is also important. If the players are otherwise happy here I think you can get some (small) discount.

I wish we'd gotten top four this season that was how I thought we'd get Saliba on side. As it is, for this group it's a necessary achievement—it'll hurt us if we don't make it this year.

Definitely. We had a chance last year but I don't think same level of expectation was there. Not getting it this season I think will kill a lot of the optimism within and outside of the squad.

do we think he keeps his place ahead of tomi? I'm torn on this one, but leaning towards tomi.

if arteta wasn't such a stickler for the footedness of players, it would be gabriel whose place might be under threat. he hasn't started the season well at all. blanco and wilo might be the move

It’s a long season, so i’m sure we’ll see Saliba and White as a centre back pairing at some point.

Gabriel sticks out like a bit of sore thumb at the moment standing in line with three defenders so technically gifted around him. He’s still a good defender and a great player, and having one player back there who is a bit more cumbersome than the others isn’t the end of the world. But i still wouldn’t mind seeing Tomi, Saliba, White and Zinchenko together at some point. We’ll definitely lose something at set pieces without him, though.

Whoever gets picked, we’re in great shape with three centre backs this good to choose from. Who could’ve seen this coming? Wild.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. Gabriel had the most touches of any of our players against Leicester (tied with Zinchenko), so I wouldn't be surprised to see White slot in there at some point.

it's interesting that the level of our core performers last season has dropped. odegaard, saka, ramsdale, partey and gabriel have started out the season looking fairly rusty, alot of which is carried over from our late season collapse. keen for these established guys to find their level again, they're all key to our success now

Definitely, no idea what they're looking at. He hasn't been in top form the first two games but over their shared playing time at Arsenal he's been much more adventurous with his passing than White, who's been pretty underwhelming on the ball imo. You can tell he has it in his locker but so far he's been mostly picking the safe option.

And even you bring out the stats saying he is the most progressive with good range people still don't believe. 😆 it's ridiculous.

Just look at the Leicester game, Gabriel cross field balls were delightful but you will have people saying he only pass short down the line
