The idea that Gabriel is lacking technically or in his passing seems to be something people have imagined rather than something that happens on the pitch.
I think it’s just cause of the way he looks on the ball. A bit cumbersome, and takes a while to sort his feet out sometimes. But he’s really quite good with his distribution.
This is not unimportant though - White and Saliba are elite technicians for CBs. Their touch, their balance, their carrying ability - it's top class. Gabriel's just isn't, and it gets him into trouble sometimes, and that's when it's obvious that he's cumbersome or awkward, but it also means he slows down our passing, misses chances to play the right pass, at the right time, with the right weight or to the correct foot etc., and maybe those things are sometimes less obvious. I agree he's a good passer though, when he gets set he has a pretty good left foot.
A pairing of White and Saliba would definitely give us a technical edge over any pairing with Gabriel in it. Horses for courses though because Gabriel brings his own strengths.

However, I just watched the keepy uppy drill exercises recently posted on .com, and he was even worse than the back up goalie. 😆 *ended up being a tie between him and Marquinhos, which he lost with an errant return pass… it was fun viewing, reminded me of the days when I used to actually enjoy training and running about.
I just went and watched that and it was good fun! Gabriel lying on the floor at the end dying of laughter was great. 😆 Everyone looks like they're loving every minute of training, and the increase in intensity in everything that's done from a year or so ago is extraordinary.
