His positioning was all over the place and 1v1 he basically just stands off. Kos was a master at 1v1 and now we’ve got people comparing this clown with Kos.

Thought he was really good today. A few iffy moments here and there, but also some real quality. Reads the game really well. Encouraging to see his confidence growing on the ball, he carried the ball really well a good few times. Hopefully Gabriel's struggles were due to being tired after traveling with Brazil? (I say this, but I don't even have a clue if he gets in their squad?)

He wasn't really good, not close and Gabriel's struggles were largely from carrying him.

given our general lack of creativity and considering the way arteta positions the centre mids, it seems ripe for a centre half to carry the ball into midfield to open up the play. he looks good when he tries it, but I'm not sure if that's his instructions or just him breaking rank out of frustration

Weird this thread gets bumped when there are so many better targets. Either way, today was not really a player problem, and even if it was, Ben White is categorically not one of them.

White's been fine overall and he may get better, but I'm finding it hard to see the value added by his signing. He hasn't transformed our defence and he hasn't really transformed our ability to dominate out the back so far either.

Yep, we still look just as bad at getting the ball out from the back. There is a reason excellent passer Ben White was replaced by bang average Shane Duffy at Brighton this season without them missing a beat. Its about the coaching not the individuals.

No point in getting angry at what a colossal waste of money this signing was, White needs evaluating when there's an actual coach in charge. I suspect he'll still be a shit signing for what he cost but everything and everyone needs to be put to the test when Arteta's out the door.

On the coaching there's one thing I've noticed White has started doing which was a really shitty thing that Luiz used to do too. He basically holds the ball for an eternity until he's pressed before passing it back to Ramsdale or Gabriel. It's clearly an instruction.

I assume it's some misguided attempt to draw the opposition up the pitch which does nothing but kill the tempo and often ends up with a long hopeful ball due to the pressure. But this sort of micromanaging is what kills a players mojo.

He's an absolute waste of money if you are taking into account of the big picture and limited finance.

On a 50m signing on its own without considering all other factors I agree with Jones, he might be a very useful weapon to have in defence under a new manager.

I think it was Cap (apologies if that's wrong) who said that it looks like once he finds his footing he'll be a decent 7/10 CB, but not a world class one. That's the way I'm seeing it at the moment as well. I don't see him ever being Ferdinand-like, to use a comparison someone mentioned some time ago.

Funny how the backlash here's only against those who have been the most vocal against Arteta and his harebrained decisions, not against those who spread their toxic positive horseshit and attacked everyone who couldn't see the progress. Although to be fair same as with our new signings everything posted in this forum should be taken under reserve as long as we don't have a coach, else we'll be at each other's throats while Arteta is standing fiddling in the back watching Arsenal and OMT burn

I don't think White has been a clown for what it's worth but there have been much more embarrassing opinions than thinking he's stood off to far off Edouard for their second.
