btw, for the benny blanco 4 ever fans: every excuse you make for him or what he can be in the future, blah blah. those are excuses that we could have been making for saliba the past couple of seasons while enduring his growing pains. when you have limited means you don't say i'm not playing this 27m developmental project and then go and buy a 50m developmental project in the same position. the more i hear about what ben white could be and give him time, the more it drives me crazy because that's what we were supposedly getting away from by sending saliba away. this shit is only acceptable if we're talking about him the way we do tommy and then i'm like yeah we signed a player who is ready for prime time because we don't do that on the job development nonsense (right?). otherwise you're full of it if you can't see why this might drive people crazy.

I'm kind of settling into the idea that he may just be a solid 6-7/10 player, whereas I previously thought he would be a difference maker.

IMO that would not be good enough particularly for the money paid and the Saliba scenario.

I'm not anti White or Gabriel, but I am anti spending 80m+ on players when we had 2 potential options to give us something similar in both Saliba and Mavropanos, and the 80m could have gone towards completing the new spine to be fit for purpose.

gabriel was good value. mavro would be good depth.

gabriel and tomiyasu were good value signings. young with upside, and didn't break the bank. it really comes down to being wiser with allocation of resources and maximising bang for buck. spending 50m on the xhaka upgrade instead of a centre half moves the needle more, especially this season considering how thin we'll be with afcon this season. and on top of it, our 50m centre half will be a project that needs time anyway, despite us paying the English tax. ok fine, but then was that the best use of money given our circumstances?

anyway that's the last time I'll mention our spending habits as I'm sure everyone is sick of belabouring the point.

Why are we moaning about White when he's proven to be at least decent if not good? When Saliba comes back they can fight for their spot and we'll have 3 good CBs the way a good club should.

Because a) White hasn't proven anything yet, he's been here just a couple months and half his time he's been dodgy as hell and b) his arrival most likely means Saliba will be on his way out unless we switch to 3atb. Which other good club has three starting level young centre backs right now?

Taking aside the questions surrounding the relationship, I think there's plenty of games to go around, Luiz our 2nd/3rd choice played 30 odd games last season. How willing White or Saliba would be to accept that sort of role probably depends on how successful we are. It's a lot more palatable doing it for a team fighting amongst the top than it is for a team in mid table.

Luiz was 34 years old, he has since signed for Flamengo for free and has barely featured for them. Comparing someone in that situation to three centre backs at the beginning of their careers who were bought for a combined 100m+ is ridiculous, and that's before you even consider that two of the players are the starting pair right now and the handling of the third guy has been atrocious.

It was the number of games I was looking at rather than whether or not Luiz was happy with it and 30+ games as a starting point for a 21yr old centre back at a big club really shouldn't be a problem. The only issue is the pre-existing baggage and the lack of CL football. I don't think Europa league games are really much of a consolation prize.

The concept of opportunity cost.

We had a player at a similar level already in Saliba, and then spent (a lot of) money on White. Money we could have used to spend on other glaring holes in the squad.

Otherwise we may as well go and spend big money on a decent RW when we already have Saka and Pepe.

The head coach didn't want Saliba. Doesn't matter what the reason was honestly - as soon as that decision was made, it was a priority to go and get someone else.
