I have to say, aside from the relief of not getting this done it's a joke that we've been pursuing this guy all summer only to pull out on the eve of the season without a viable backup goalie. Only way it would sort of make sense is if we know Onana will wait for us.
Given Onana's ban and the fact that Ajax have opnely said they will sell for £6m, there's a definite possibility we have had him in mind since the beginning after sounding him out about a deal. The same way we left Partey sitting there all summer, knowing we could go in at the eleventh hour and make him ours.
If we're going to keep Leno due to a lack of interest then Onana coming in at the latest possible moment before the window closes makes perfect sense. He can't train until September, so we'd just be paying his wages had we signed him earlier.
May be wishful thinking! 😆
