I feel like and chance we had, no matter how slim, has just become impossible. Only way for football to survive now is to put real wage and spend caps caps and make it more like American sports. The Super League doesn't sound so bad anymore.

If we weren't already we are well and truly consigned to midtable mediocrity until something changes in football.

The response to this from fans, and subsequently leagues and regulators, is going to become more and more self-evidently political … and although I do not at all rate the ethics of our ownership, I'm glad we're not owned by the sports investment shell of a deeply repressive state.

Edit: well, actually, maybe we are. But still, there are degrees of complicity.

See edit above. But my qualification was more about whether KSE is a "sports investment shell" of that state - but no doubt there's a reasonable argument it is.

Our fantasy group was chatting about this today. Being a supporter is an affliction as much as it is a choice. How do I stop caring about Arsenal's results and footballing fortunes. I still get anxious when I go to sleep if I know we're playing during the night.
That won't change if we're owned by Mother Theresa or the Qatari royal family.

Depends on what happens this season, but I think Kroenke might take the initiative to sell. It is now going to be very hard to get in the CL to make it worthwhile for him.

You will literally have to be a CL winning type team, just to qualify for it from England soon.

Best scenario now is for the Kroenkes to sell, the ESL to happen but for us not to be part of it. That or we get bought out by the Kuwaitis and rule the football world.

Unless we have a phenomenal manager and lucked into a few world class potential youths, even Daniel Ek takeover will not get us into top 4 consistently if Newcastle become a mega club as expected.

The Kuwaitis don't really dabble in football right?

Ironically, this may have the effect of further reducing whatever little ambition the Kroenkes are trying to show through our spending. If getting top 4 is not even a possibility going forward, the difference between finishing say 6th / 7th and 10th may not be sufficient to justify any meaningful spending so might as well take cash out as dividends.

we really fucked ourselves over between 2013-2017. that was the last window of opportunity to nick a title if we'd operated with a shred of ambition and direction. the kroenkes can sell up in ignominy now. pay the price for years passive bullshit leadership. the panic spending in the last 2 years was too little too late

I'm a few takeovers away from not bothering with epl tbh. throw in the ESL and a world cup every year. let's watch it all go to shit.

I always look to Leicester as an example of what can happen with good recruitment, management, great team chemistry, and some luck.

Comparing our team now to theirs, we have about as much quality. The rest is about the management or coaching to have the team playing as a team, and being lucky. If we are able to fix the management aspect asap and avoid serious injuries to our key players - Auba, Partey, Saka/ESR, Odegaard, (Pepe) we have a great chance to get back in the top four as early as this season. I feel we have enough as it stands player quality wise to achieve it.

It's not really about falling behind, it's windows of opportunity closing. The same players/coaches/manager you may have got 'cheap' to move you into your desired position become scarcer with every massive investment.

A lot of people are understandably downhearted about this, but it is what it is.

We love this club, but don't let football affect your wellbeing. There are 10,000 minutes a week, and we only play for 90 of them. It's healthy to switch off from it for a bit. Look after yourselves people.
