The way Gareth was talking to Grealish in the huddle, I felt that he was designated for the 6th penalty. Poor choice to put saka in first 5 or at least not change order after seeing how it was going in the shootout.

Southgate is to be blamed though let's be real. He brought on 2 players specifically to take pens where they didn't even touch the ball and head wasn't in the game.

He's really a terrible manager lucked into a final with decisions going all his way. It was the easiest run to the final and he scored in the first minute, managed to turn dominance into outright defence and paid for his cowardice. He had tons of attacking talents but played more defensive players in the entire tournament. He definitely had it coming. It was harder not to win this tournament for him.

Yep. It was definitely rehearsed. Rashford and Sancho are penalty takers for their clubs. And he probably also picked Saka because they wanted an element of surprise for the Italian keeper who would have no data on his kick

I love the offside decisions by var and how it was ran. Advantage to the attackers when in doubt and no nosnesne lines drawn. Refs let the game flow mostly.

Funny how there's no outstanding player in the entire tournament a keeper won the POTT. No proper golden boot winner too, Ronaldo won it with mostly penalties despite being knocked out 3 rounds earlier.

To be honest the decisions with the pens could have gone any way. I actually think donnarumma deserves a lot of credit because he has both the ability to not give away which way he's going (which visibly put off Rashford and Sancho) and still make a very decent attempt to save despite the late dive.

As Clrnc says the bigger critisism of Southgate is the negativity. I don't know how people were trying to justify picking Trippier over Grealish, Foden, Sancho, Saka or even Rashford. Don't let the run or the fact that it went to penalties fool you, it was not remotely convincing at any stage.

It was startling how referees didn't blow their whistle everytime someone fell over, poor Kane lost 50% of what he's all about tonight.

Remember when the PL refs supposedly 'let more go' than the European counterparts?

5 at the back with Rice and Phillips in midfield was ultra conservative. No idea why he got Saka on anyway, this was a game for Foden.

Either way Saka chose to go with the pen, and must live with it now. Could make or break him.

Think Southgate poorly managed the game and that's been symptomatic of his time. Very reminiscent of the Croatia game seemed to not to know what to do and far too cautious.

On the penalties I think the takers were odd but I question why sterling or grealish or Shaw wouldn't want to take them but they can go either way.

Ultimately think that more issues with Southgate's management to loyal and stubborn to change certain things. But that's the nature of being an England fan I guess.

Way too conservative as others have said. Hope to see Bellingham and Willock brought in to the fold moving forward.

Chiellini was great in the tournament, but I personally thought that Bonucci was sensational. Great reading of the game, with a bit of nastiness.

Re Southgate:

Shocking, shocking, shocking tactical handling of the game today. At another big nation, he would be sacked after tonight. We gave Italy far too much respect. We simply sat back for far too long and the ball couldn’t stick upfront.

Also, how the fuck did Mason fucking Mount get 90mins? The most non-descript performance I have seen from a player in a while, let alone a final. He literally did fuck all, and Southgate had all those options on the bench. Utter madness.

Grealish should have been on at half time for Mount. Grealish could have held on to the ball, as well as beat the press of Italy.

I thought Bonucci looked great too. Like a wall at times, didn't realise how good he was on the ball either.

Chiellini was good but yeah, for me Bonucci was better overall. And yeah, his passing was surpringly good. He's played every minute of every game right? I think Chiellini missed a couple games in the group stage or second round right?

Sport is cruel. But I suppose it makes the rare triumphs all the more worth it when most of the time you get this. Yes, aware there haven't been football triumphs in living memory for England, talking sport in general.

I kept hearing McManaman talk about "the shift" that Mount put in today. To me, that equates to 'didn't do a fuckin thing and was pretty much anonymous'
