If a coach decides that whoever is best at penalties in training should take the fifth penalty tonight he needs to step down. Might as well not be the same sport.
Southgate will say that he picked the takers to deflect any blame from the players who didn't come forward, as he should as manager, but it was obvious that he didn't have the finished order at the end of the game. You could clearly see him ask who wanted to take one on my tv. Mings found himself the most visible player in the ring that had formed, and he wasn't even eligible. Most of the others sort of shrunk away. When you ask a teenager in that scenario if they want to have a go it's almost impossible for them to say no.
